Work Matters: The importance of a job for a recovering addict

Generally, people come into recovery from drug and alcohol addiction with very low self-esteem. Most recovering addicts feel unproductive and ashamed when they are unable to provide for themselves or their families.

These feelings of powerlessness can be alleviated when a person in recovery finds stable, long-term employment. Successful employment satisfies the psychological needs of the recovering addict and helps them regain their self-esteem by being able to actively participate in society. They find themselves interacting with others with less and less difficulty, being productive and becoming self sufficient?which helps them realize their full potential. More importantly, they are able to regain their dignity and integrity.

This is why Oasis Addiction Recovery Society offers an Employment Preparation/Job Placement Program to assist people in recovery prepare for re-entry into the workforce.

Comprised of five workshops, participants in the program learn about labour market research and job-search techniques and are able to practice the interview skills that will enable them to land their dream job. Facilitators assist the individuals to create a bio, after which they work one-on-one with Oasis Job Developers to create a first-class, job-specific resume. Job search sessions are held twice a week, allowing participants to get personalized assistance as they look for work.
