Guam News - Guam News

Guam- Agat Mayor Carol Tayama and several residents in her village are upset about a deal struck between the Department of Parks and Recreation and a jet ski company to utilize Nimitz Beach.

Tayama tells PNC many residents who use the beach for recreational purposes complained to her they were chased out of the area and public bathrooms that the jet ski business was occupying. When the mayor met with Parks and Rec and the Governor's Office, she found out the vendor paid $1,500 dollars and signed a contract with former Director Pete Calvo.

While Nimitz Beach is under the jurisdiction of Parks and Rec, Tayama says her office has been maintaining the area. She says she's angry the agency did not have the common courtesy to inform her of its plans.

?I didn't know anything about this? said Tayama. ?I wasn't given that consideration to be informed of having this vendor there. What the people are saying is this is a public beach. The ocean is supposed to be free. Look at what's happening. This jet ski company is ruining the livelihood of the people in the south. Now where are they going to go swimming? Where are they going to go to go fishing? It's not available because that jet ski company is there. I'm sorry, I go with what the people want and they should have considered that.?

The mayor says some of her residents have scheduled a demonstration tomorrow, January 19, around 11 a.m. to express their concerns.

However, Parks and Rec Director Ray Blas and Governor's Office representative Jesse Alig confirmed they already met with the mayor and they came to a resolution. Blas notes the vendor, PSV Corporation, will be moving to the far left side of the beach. He also says the vendor did not chase away residents and has helped the agency in cleaning the bathrooms and painting a pavilion at Nimitz Beach.

Despite the verbal resolution, the mayor says the demonstration will continue as planned.
