Given the opportunity to select paint colors for their living spaces, many people make their choices based strictly on their decor, current trends, and personal preferences. I had often read this, but have firsthand knowledge since choosing a color for the interior of my home that elicits a happy response in me every time I walk in the house.

Since color can dramatically change the appearance of a room, making it appear larger or smaller, a trendy color just might not be the wisest choice for your space. It is usually best to choose your floor covering and fabrics first since paint comes in a vast range of colors and shades to match or compliment your choices. A common doubt amongst most enthusiast photographers is whether a high end point and shoot digital camera as good as a DSLR. The answer is both: Yes and No.

What one needs to understand about digital cameras is that they are only a tool to capture photographs. Who yields them is something that matters a lot. Give a DSLR camera to a novice and watch him squander the opportunity, while give a common point and shoot to a professional and watch him capture some delightful images. Do the reverse and you might still get similar results.

Now how about the other condition when it's a professional trying to use a point and shoot digital camera and a DSLR for comparison purposes?

Clearly, a DSLR due to its virtue of more controls offers far more settings and thus effects in your pictures. It wins hands down. Capabilities of a point and shoot digital camera are however limited. It doesn't offer as much flexibilities, not even the best cameras. Fortunately that divide is quickly narrowing down, thanks to the advancements in technology and its shrinking sizes. Think of cameras like Lumix, which pack a punch in all departments and provided that you don't want to capture a picture that is very DSLR oriented, deliver equally exciting results. After all, best cameras such as Lumix packs all the powerful insights and experience of Panasonic imaging team, which year after year has delivered some most talked about and acclaimed cameras.

Another way to look at the question is to factor in the conditions in which photos are to be compared. If it's normal day light and no external lights are required, high end digital cameras and DSLRs would have almost similar results. Of course the bokeh, which is the blur present in the background due to bigger apertures afforded by a DSLR, would be absent or minimal. Otherwise sharpness and colors would be as good. The real comparison would be when both the cameras capture an image with foreground and background in focus. The differences would be hard to tell!

With modern innovations, the differences are so minimal that most professional cameramen today carry a point and shoot digital camera as a backup for its innate quality of capturing things in good focus. Post production being completely digital today also means that they can inject effects in the images later on as well.

In the end a high end point and shoot digital camera can be equally exciting as a DSLR provided one knows how to play around with the settings and understand what all can be achieved in post processing. Once you master than, you virtually do away with the differences between digital cameras and DSLR cameras.

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? On a time scale of tens to hundreds of millions of years, the geomagnetic field may be influenced by currents in the mantle. The frequent polarity reversals of Earth's magnetic field can also be connected with processes in the mantle. These are the research results presented by a group of geoscientists in the new advance edition of Nature Geoscience on July 29th.

The results show how the rapid processes in the outer core, which flows at rates of up to about one millimeter per second, are coupled with the processes in the mantle, which occur more in the velocity range of centimeters per year.

The international group of scientists led by A. Biggin of the University of Liverpool included members of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, the IPGP Paris, the universities of Oslo and Utrecht, and other partners.

It is known that Earth's magnetic field is produced by convection currents of an electrically conducting iron-nickel alloyin the liquid core, about 3,000 kilometers below Earth's surface. The geomagnetic field is highly variable, there are changes in Earth's magnetic field on a multitude of spatial and temporal scales. Above the liquid outer core is the mantle, the rock in which behaves plastically deformable due to the intense heat and high pressure. At the boundary between Earth's core and mantle at 2900 km depth there is an intense heat exchange, which is on the one hand directed from Earth's core into the mantle. On the other hand, processes within Earth's mantle in turn also affect the heat flow. The interesting question is how the much slower flow in the solid mantle influences the heat flow and its spatial distribution at the core-mantle boundary, and how this will affect the Earth's magnetic field which is produced due to the much faster currents in Earth's core.

Key variable heat transfer

"The key variable is the heat flow. A cooler mantle accelerates the flow of heat from the hot core of Earth, and in this way alters the also heat-driven convection in Earth's core," said Bernhard Steinberger of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences. "Ocean floor sinking into the mantle due to tectonic processes can lead to cooling in the mantle. They cause at these sites an increased heat flow into the cooler parts, namely until they have been heated to the ambient temperature." That might take several hundred million years, however.

Conversely, the hot core of Earth leads to the ascent of heated rocks in form of large bubbles, so-called mantle plumes that separate from the core-mantle boundary and make their way up to the surface of Earth. This is how Hawaii came into existence. This increases the local heat flux out of Earth's core and in turn modifies the generator of the geomagnetic field.

Reversals of the magnetic field

In Earth's history, polarity reversals of the geomagnetic field are nothing extraordinary. The most recent took place only 780 000 years ago, geologically speaking a very short period of time. The research team was able to determine that in the period of 200 to 80 million years before present, reversals initially happened more often, namely up to ten times in hundred million years. "Surprisingly, these reversals stopped about 120 million years ago and were absent for nearly 40 million years," explains GFZ scientist Sachs. Scientists presume that the reason for this is a concurrent reorientation of the whole mantle and crust with a shift in the geographic and magnetic poles of about 30?. Known as "true polar wander," thisprocess is caused by a change in density distribution in the mantle. If it increases the heat flux in equatorial regions, it would presumably lead to more frequent field reversals, if it decreases it, the field reversal might not occur.

Looking to the future

According to current knowledge, therefore, an influence of plate tectonics and mantle convection on Earth's magnetic field seems quite possible. The article also shows, however, that further research is still needed for a better understanding of these relationships. In particular, more episodes of "true polar wander" should be derived from paleomagnetic data, and it should be determined whether these are usually associated with an altered behavior of the magnetic field (e.g. frequency of field reversal). Also, future models for the generation of the geomagnetic field should investigate the influence of the spatial and temporal variation of the heat flux at the core-mantle boundary in more detail.

July 27th 2012, and it was the Olympic Opening Ceremony. My brother was in the cast, so that?s the show I want to focus on, and the goal achievement lessons it tells us?

The show could certainly be described as an extravaganza, and it was also quirkily British, or should that be Britishly quirky?

In sport and entertainment, long time readers will know I love to go behind the scenes, focus on the people who are maybe not slap bang in the spotlight. So, my brother Glen being in the Opening Ceremony screamed out for me to write about it!

The picture above is of my brother with director Danny Boyle, I?m sure Boyle is thinking ?how many of these fecking eejits do I have to have a picture with?? but according to Glen he was always accommodating.

Glen has loved the Olympics longer than I have (because he?s older!) so when he saw the chance to audition for the show, he took it. It was several rounds of auditions too, not just one.

Then, once in the show, it was committing to getting to rehearsals, and hour after hour of them. Day after day, he had to sort things around him being at the rehearsals, all on public transport around a very full time job.

Then as the show approached, he asked me if I wanted to go to a dress rehearsal at the stadium ? naturally I did, so it was a thrill to be able to watch him in the stadium.

July 27th ? showtime! Glen?s slot lasted around 10 minutes as he strutted his stuff around a bed in the section celebrating the NHS. All that effort, time, work, commitment, led to a wonderful evening of enjoyment.

I would say it?s something to stay long in the memory, but in fact for him it will stay in the memory full stop!

This is a snap from the BBC coverage, even though he sings like a woman and screams like a little girl, neither of these are Glen. It does show the segment he was in though.

Scroll back up though, and take a closer look at the photo at the top of Glen and Danny. The goal achievement lessons are not hard to spot in Glen?s case ? spot a goal you want, take action towards it, put in the work, and get there. Look behind him though?

Look at some of the other performers. There were over 10,000 of them in total, and *all* of them did the same as Glen. They all have their individual stories of arranging their lives to manage the requirements of being in the show.

Many different routes to being in the same place at the same time.

So, think of the fireworks yes, think of the spectacle of such a mass of performers yes, but then think of the individuals involved ? your goal may or may not to be in the Brazil 2016 Ceremony, but whatever your goal is, think how you apply the lessons from London 2012.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is reaffirming U.S. ties with Israel, upstaging Mitt Romney one day before the Republican challenger visits Jerusalem.

The White House says Obama will sign legislation Friday that expands military and civilian cooperation with Israel. The bill passed by voice vote in the House last week. The bill reiterates U.S. support for a negotiated two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Romney is a critic of Obama's policy toward Israel. He arrives in Jerusalem on Saturday on an overseas trip that includes Britain and Poland.

The White House subtly injected itself into Romney's trip on Thursday after Romney caused a stir by calling London's problems with Olympics preparation "disconcerting."

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Obama "has the utmost confidence" in Britain's ability to host the games.

Carly Rae Jepsen is having an exceptionally good year. Her single ?Call Me, Maybe? has been covered, parodied, mashed, lampooned, and lip-synced so many times that I honestly can?t say for sure if I?ve actually seen the original video. The song has become a huge summer hit, and it doesn?t look like the ferver surrounding the tune is going to die down anytime soon. Sadly, with sudden fame often comes unexpected turmoil. In Jepsen?s case, it?s the dreaded sex tape.

A few weeks ago, nude photos began to circulate of Carly Rae Jepsen, snapshots which allegedly featured the singer brandishing her pierced nipples. As it turns out, those photos weren?t real; the images were actually of a 21-year-old Internet model who apparently has no qualms about taking her clothes off in front of the camera on a fairly regular basis. Catastrophe averted, right? Unfortunately, things only got worse from there.

On July 23rd, an alleged sex tape featuring the ?Call Me, Maybe? singer made its way online, prompting the Canadian pop star to address the leak on her Twitter page. ?Crazy morning. Discovered that someone put up a sex tape claiming to be me. Ridiculous,? she explained. ?Obviously not me.? Obviously.

Just when the nude photos and sex tape rumors had started to die down, another rears its ugly head. This time, however, the photos could be real. According to TMZ, the singer?s laptop was hacked not too long ago, and several personal images were taken as a result. As per usual, someone is attempting to shop the images to various websites, though no takers have been announced as of this writing. Authorities, meanwhile, are on the case, and if reports are telling the truth, they even have a suspect already in mind.

Considering the guy who hacked Scarlett Johansson?s phone is facing all sorts of trouble, I?m assuming Carly Rae Jepsen?s electronic intruder will face similar charges for his actions. However, here?s a good rule of thumb to live by: If you don?t want naked photos of yourself leaked onto the Internet, don?t take naked photos of yourself. Easy enough.

I love Facebook.? But after a full year of socializing through FB, I have taken a summer pause to evaluate my ?Facebook friendships,? relationships which are not all traditional or non-virtual but which can as easily become dysfunctional.? Reviewing and cleaning up my FB network took both time and reflection ? but all worthy relationships require diligence, purpose and care.? Facebook relationships are no exception.

Let me emphasize that I love Facebook.? Like people who use several rolls of aluminum foil a month, I am a ?heavy wrapper? when it comes to Facebook:? I like to share photos, status, articles, funny stuff, news, family matters and posts from this blog and others, often several times a day.? I like to read where others are and what they find of interest.? I don?t mind the deluge of posts from heavy wrappers like Elizabeth Scalia or Leticia Velasquez ? neither of whom I?ve met but both are bloggers who share posts and links on Facebook everyday, all day.? I enjoy light wrappers, too ? friends or family members who only occasionally post a tidbit, peak or comment, made precious by its rarity.

I?ve met some wonderful New Feminists and new friends on Facebook, connecting through mutual friends or ?cold calling? to be friends because they wrote something interesting, provocative or memorable.? I?ve joined the community support for heroes like Travis Mills and followed interests ranging from Snowshoe Magazine to Beauty and the Beast to New Feminism.? I have FB friends who post recipes, tattoos, prayers, military videos, political quotes, vacation photos, cute puppies, health alerts, and pleas to add one more ?like? or one more donation to a favorite cause.

I especially love comments ? that tell-me-what-you-really-think space where a post becomes a connection, maturing into a discussion with FB friends and strangers.?? I get a buzz from the occasional snarky comments I receive from people who experience something I?ve posted emotionally, even personally, as though I posted specifically to aggravate them.? I appreciate these comments ? and doubtless, I make them myself.? This is the buzz of engagement, an intentional sparring of differences, where we are invited to another point of view and ?like? can mean, ?I hear you,? not ?I agree with you.?? I value what I learn in these exchanges and how relationships ? based on blood, shared experiences or simple fascination ? prevail and no one defriends each other, at least, not for long.

This is the healthy side of Facebook, I?ve concluded, well worth preserving and sharing ? and protecting.

To protect the health of my FB network, I have decided to set boundaries on my network.? I have implemented two criteria for defriending family or friends on Facebook.

1. ?Abusive language.? Call me sensitive ? many people do ? but when snarky becomes abusive, it?s time to part company.? I recognize that posts or comments with pointed insults, name-calling or cursing are truly ?just words? on FB and, often, reflect a user?s passing mood, alcohol level or frustrated passion, but I am not an ?idiot? and my opinions are not ?asinine? and if a ?friend? thinks otherwise, that person is not a friend ? real or virtual.? Even on Facebook ? perhaps especially on Facebook and other social networks ? word choice recognizes and honors the dignity of the other person, or not.? I have no interest in comments and posts that invalidate, denigrate or verbally assault groups or individuals, perpetuating online personal dysfunctions.? To remain FB friends with such users enables behavior that destroys and dismantles ? not nurtures and builds ? community.? All human communities will have multiple differences, even disputes ? but they are guaranteed to escalate in hostility when we turn the other into an opponent, combatant or object for defeat.

2. ?One-sidedness. ??Lopsided friendships are always suspect, typically characterized by boundary issues that leave one person anxious to please another who is needy and without personal resource.? We?ve all seen or known these situations: where one person never seems able to say ?no? just as the other person can?t resist asking one more favor ? or where one person works pathetically to win affection that is withheld but not foreclosed.? FB, I discovered in my summer review, can foster a similar ?one-sidedness? that I almost did not notice:? FB friends who never post, never comment, never share but amply consume information about other people.? There may well be situations where lack of mutuality is relatively harmless ? but I decided to give focused consideration whether the FB eavesdroppers upon my life are people who I really ought to be having real relationships with. ?Defriending FB friends because the friendship is not mutual, I hope, will define the reality because, without virtual contact, we will either reach out for face time, or we won?t.

I am only half way through summer.? Facebook ? how it connects me, how I use and misuse it ? remains in my near sights.? Possibly, I?ve just begun to wrench this social tool, and when to defriend friends, into proper position.

Some of the most stirring and moving accounts of efforts I have come across to save the world have been made by children. The sheer goodness of their big hearts can be overwhelming and they don?t let anything stop them. Ever hear of Ryan Hrelijac? This Canadian youth learned in school at age 7 that people were dying in Uganda from the lack of clean drinking water.

This amazing child raised enough money by doing chores at home to build a well in Uganda in 1999. Oh, but that was just the beginning. This child (now a young man) has gone on, through the Ryan?s Well Foundation (a Canadian registered charity), to raise the money to build over 700 wells and 900 latrines bringing safe water and improved sanitation to over 750,900 people. (You can learn about Ryan and his foundation and, if you want, you can obtain a very moving documentary called ?Ryan?s Well? through the Video Project that tells the story of what he did as a child. You can Google ?Ryan?s Well? and see clips of the documentary on YouTube.

I thought about Ryan when I read about how students from 116 schools in 22 states collectively prevented 1,567,562 pounds of global warming carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere in just four weeks during the 2012 national Green Cup Challenge? (GCC).

The GCC is an inter-school energy conservation challenge for grades K-12 and it is sponsored by the non-profit Green Schools Alliance. The friendly challenge empowers students and staff to conserve electricity, raise environmental awareness and decrease their campus? carbon footprint. The Green Cup Video Challenge has helped student videos go viral on YouTube. Among the top reducing schools this year were the Buckly School (-8.7%) and the Lycee Francais School (-8.7%) both in New York City.

If anybody is going to save the world it?s going to be the children.

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Incorporating coronary CT angiography (CCTA) into the initial evaluation of low-risk patients coming to hospital emergency departments (EDs) with chest pain appears to reduce the time patients spend in the hospital without incurring additional costs or exposing patients to significant risks. The report of a study conducted at nine U.S. hospitals appears in the July 26 New England Journal of Medicine.

"We found that the use of CCTA in emergency department evaluation of acute chest pain very effectively identified which patients did or did not have coronary artery obstruction, allowing clinicians to focus the use of resources on patients with heart disease," says Udo Hoffmann, MD, MPH, director of the Cardiac MR PET CT program at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and corresponding author of the NEJM article. "Although the use of CCTA added to the amount of diagnostic testing used in the evaluation process, compared with current standard protocols it significantly reduced length of stay without increasing costs."

CCTA combines advanced CT scanning with the use of intravenous contrast material to produce detailed images of blood vessels supplying the heart without the need for cardiac catheterization. Several previous studies, including an immediate predecessor to the current one, have indicated that CCTA can effectively distinguish chest pain patients that do not have coronary artery disease, but those studies all had such limitations as lack of a control group or limited analysis of factors like costs and radiation exposure. The current study -- ROMICAT (Rule Out Myocardial Infarction/Ischemia Using Computer Assisted Tomography)-II -- was designed to determine whether a CCTA-based evaluation strategy could improve clinical decision making at different hospitals across the country.

From April 2010 to January 2012, patients arriving at the participating hospitals' EDs for evaluation of chest pain who had no history of cardiovascular disease and whose initial tests -- ECG and measurement of the biomarker troponin -- did not clearly indicate a heart attack were invited to participate in the trial. Those who agreed to participate were randomly assigned to one of two groups. The control group proceeded with standard evaluation, with all diagnostic and treatment decisions being made by hospital physicians not part of the study group. The other group had CCTA as part of their ED evaluation, with the results being shared with attending physicians who, again, made all clinical decisions. Participants who were discharged from the hospital within 24 hours of arrival were called within 72 hours to assess their status, and all participants were called 28 days after hospital discharge and asked whether any return ED visits or rehospitalizations had taken place. Participant responses were verified by checking their medical records. About 1,000 patients completed the study, including the 28-day followup.

The investigators found that participants in the CCTA group had significant reductions in the amount of time from ED arrival until discharge either from the ED or after a hospital stay, with half of the CCTA group being discharged within 8.6 hours but only 10 percent of the control group being released so quickly. The amount of time until a diagnosis of heart disease was either ruled out or confirmed was also shorter for the CCTA group than for the controls, and more patients receiving CCTA were discharged directly from the ED rather than being admitted to an observation unit. The percentage of patients actually diagnosed with heart disease was similar in both groups at around 8 percent, and there were no missed diagnoses in either group.

Analysis of total clinical resources used from arrival to discharge indicated that CCTA participants had more diagnostic procedures than control group members, but the difference was not statistically significant. Neither were there any significant differences between groups in total costs through the 28-day followup in those participants for whom cost information was available. CCTA group participants were exposed to higher cumulative doses of radiation, but the authors note that recent studies have indicated that CCTA can often be successfully performed using lower doses and suggest that future studies test the utility of low-dose CCTA examination.

"It's very important to strive for the greatest efficiency in diagnostic testing, and in this study, additional testing was primarily carried out in patients found to have coronary artery disease," Hoffmann says. "There also were fewer adverse clinical events in those receiving CCTA, although the study group was too small to conclude that CCTA reduced those risks.

"Showing at a variety of clinical sites that CCTA is at least as good as standard ED evaluation without increasing costs elevates the procedure from one appropriate only for specialized settings to one that can be applied in many centers," he adds. "I'd really like to commend the commitment and teamwork of all the participating sites and departments, which was essential to the successful completion of this study." Hoffmann is an associate professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.
