Sweet Dog Nurses Kitten Back to Heath | Babble Pets
There are sometimes I am so over the sad stories I hear in the news ? both human news and pet news. It seems to be all we hear lately and well, that can start breaking our hearts the more we hear them.
Then, once in a while I come across a story that just warms my heart. It stands out from the rest of the sad news and can remind me that the world is a super sweet place.
A story came out a few days ago from?Minnesota and it involves two of the cutest creatures on the planet ? a dog and a tiny kitten.
A woman named Pat Weber owns a barn in?Jordan, about 40 miles southwest of Minneapolis and was enjoying the day with her grandson on September 24th, 2012. He was playing in the barn when he found a tiny kitten ? only about 2 inches long.
Weber says the tiny kitten was ?ice cold? but after feeling it move, she wrapped it up in a warm towel and brought it inside. That?s when the story gets adorable (promise, this isn?t a sad story about a forgotten kitten).
Weber has a 4-year old dog named?Mittens (aaw!) and when she heard the tiny kitten start to meow, she was interested. The tiny kitten nuzzled into Mittens, who started to lick her, and the kitten started?suckling, nursing on Mittens who hasn?t had her own litter for 2 years.
It took about 3 days for Mittens to start to produce milk according to Pat and ever since, Mittens has been a loving adopted mother to the tiny grey kitten who has been named Bootsie.
To see the actual cat and dog in the story, head to abc local and check out the cute!

Painting Kitchen Cabinets: What's Involved For a Professional Finish ...
A kitchen remodel with new cabinetry costs big bucks. Instead of taking out a loan for a new look, consider painting your cabinets to refresh your kitchen. Let?s talk about what such a DIY project would involve and whether or not you might need to hire help for best results.
Removing Cabinet Doors and Drawers
Your first step will be to remove every cabinet door and drawer in your kitchen, while keeping track of both the hardware attaching the doors to the base, as well as the hardware you must remove from the doors and drawers, such as knobs and/or pulls. If your hardware is not the same for all doors and for all drawers, you will also want to organize it in such a way that you can easily know what to reattach where.
Sanding and Cleaning Cabinet Doors and Drawers
You will then want to sand any rough areas you find before thoroughly cleaning each door, drawer and surface with a sponge soaked with denatured alcohol, then wrung out. Denatured alcohol will remove any dirt and grease, but it also will emit stinky fumes so be sure to open windows in your kitchen and use floor fans.
Sealing and Painting All Surfaces
Once all surfaces are dry, which takes about an hour, apply your chosen paint. You will need to apply at least two thin coats for the best finish, with three recommended. Each coat takes about four hours to dry.
DIY vs. Hire
Whether you DIY this project or hire professional painters depends on your skill level and available free time. If you do not have painting experience, you might want to assign this to-do task out, as if you don?t get good results, you will be faced with them every time you enter the kitchen.
Also keep in mind the time it will take to do this project yourself. Many online DIY time estimators say to devote a weekend to this project, but that can vary greatly depending on how many cabinets you have. With the push toward greater storage in homes, you could have more than two dozen cabinets and drawers combined. Consider that you will need to remove, clean, prep, paint and reattach every single one. With drying time, it seems unlikely that you could accomplish all of that in a weekend, no matter how small the kitchen.
That said, a professional painter could get the job done in just a couple of days, as he or she will have the skill and help to accomplish this task on your timeline. You also will be more satisfied with the results because of that skill level.
As with all DIY vs. Hire situations, factor in how much your time is worth when comparing costs. If you have precious free time with your family, it might make more sense to leave this and other jobs such as these to the professionals.

Preparation of quality items on-line internet business | ateslilolitam ...
It amazes me sometimes just all the people who were part of the fraud when it comes to online business, and this brings me to another point that I want to talk with you. You see, in the form of prolific online article writer who wrote a series of articles on the subject of internet business activity. I would argue that more writers to prepare articles of quality content online about this, some people are, by nature, ethics and busy copying what others are doing in their online business that may be unethical to prevent worsening of the problem.
You see, if more people from home business online, however, there will be more customers because people feel more comfortable doing business on the internet. At the time people were quite simple, and buy the best e-commerce sites, they do not trust anyone else. It is not so large as to not cut or accidentally released hundreds of thousands of credit card numbers or personal information of customers. We all know what happened.
However, if everyone is running their online business with integrity, I?m pretty sure that the volume of online business literally doubled in a very short time. Oh, of course, doubles as well, but it will be much faster. As the author of the article online, you can consider this as this is the main sub-themes related to the topic of Internet companies, one of them, you have to write. Yes, the subject is almost endless, but you need some ideas to get you started in your writing, so you can make a positive difference.
Consider, if you want every business in the real world, at least part of your online business. Therefore, you can write an article or series of articles for all industries, but still in line pattern. You can have the best software, the best hardware, and the latest developments in mobile computing and mobile transactions. We can talk about advertising, marketing, social media and new ideas and concepts for new business.
Can you explain how one can create your own online business, what are the rules to be followed, and how to build your business to start ? as ethically conducted. You can tell them what to look for, how VAT works, how to accept credit cards online, and how to create a robust cybersecurity strategy to maintain. All these things are worthy statements and information that people need to know if you want to live from online business. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this while preparing quality content online about this topic.

Could you live in 150 square feet? Cities try out micro-housing.
Micro-housing aims to diversify downtowns and give workers the chance to shorten their commutes, but not everyone likes the idea. San Francisco weighed such a proposal Tuesday.
By Gloria Goodale,?Staff writer / September 25, 2012
EnlargeDespite a soft housing market nationwide, rents in some of America?s biggest cities are still beyond the means of many families and singles who both want and need to live downtown. So cities from San Francisco and Seattle to Chicago and New York have begun trials of ever-smaller efficiency apartments ? dubbed micro-housing ? in the hearts of their metropolises, proposing units as tiny as 150 square feet with monthly rents as low as $495.

On Tuesday afternoon, San Francisco?s Board of Supervisors met to discuss proposed legislation that would allow developers to build units at the 150-square-foot size.
While some applaud efforts to diversify these downtowns and give workers the opportunity to shorten their commutes to city centers, opponents question whether this move is good for the quality of life ? either for the renters or for the nearby neighborhoods.
?Everyone agrees we have a housing crisis in San Francisco,? says Supervisor Scott Wiener, who represents District 8 and proposed the legislation under discussion. ?A robust discussion about housing needs in the city benefits everyone.?
Many constituencies in San Francisco agree these units would be appropriate, Mr. Wiener adds. ?We have a dramatic shortage of student housing, senior housing, and other needs such as emancipated foster youth,? he says, noting, ?We are talking about doing it as a trial.?
Other cities have similar trials under way, such as New York City, where Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently approved a 60-unit development of micro-apartments at 275 square feet each.
But Jane Kim, another San Francisco supervisor, says there is little research about these kinds of units in her city and does not support rushing into new regulations that might open a door to developers. ?Frankly, I don?t see the crushing need at that end of the spectrum,? she says, pointing to different demands in District 6, which she represents.
?The biggest need we see in San Francisco is in the two- and three-bedroom apartments for low-income families, not the small efficiency units,? Supervisor Kim says. Beyond that, she says, ?we are not encouraging these kinds of developments because we have no idea how they will further strain our amenities ? things such as schools, transportation, and especially open spaces.?
While US cities struggle with a lack of affordable housing in their downtowns, urban areas around the globe, from Paris to Tokyo, have been tackling this issue for a long time, points out New York designer and architect Alexander Gendell, whose company Folditure specializes in foldaway furniture for compact spaces.
Low quality of life does not have to go hand in hand with limited living space, he says. He points to Tokyo, where the Japanese have figured out how to make every inch of living space count, he says. ?It?s entirely possible to live well in 200 square feet of living space,? he says, as long as every function has been well thought out.
?We are certainly not the first ones to deal with this issue,? Mr. Gendell says with a laugh. ?We are blessed in this country with more living space,? he says, but many other nations have proved that it is entirely possible to live in a more concentrated living environment ? one that would be better for the planet.
Chicago has had success with such micro-housing, says Charles Hoch, professor of urban planning at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Removing social fears is an important first step, he says, explaining that identifying small units exclusively with very low-income people tends to generate fears about concentrations of poor people attracting crime.
Downtown Chicago has benefited from thousands of dorm units built in large high-density buildings in recent decades, Professor Hoch says. Organizations like Mercy Housing Lakefront ?have also built high-density buildings with small units for the homeless as well,? he says via e-mail, adding, ?The more we increase the diversity and supply of small single-room units, the more rents will decline and more single people with moderate and low incomes will find a place to live.?
San Francisco must diversify to meet many needs, says Wiener, who is on the city?s land-use committee. ?There is this perception that this legislation will open up a tidal wave of this construction,? he says, ?but that?s just not true; it will be balanced.?

Kickstarter Will Not Save Artists From the Entertainment Industry?s Shackles
Courtesy Kickstarter.
To see how the highly decentralized world of social media could disrupt the hegemony of established taste-makers in music, design, or fashion, look no further than Kickstarter. Just like Wikipedia redefined the process of creating an encyclopedia, this poster child of the crowdfunding revolution could redefine how dreamers raise funds for their next gadget or film?and perhaps even beget a cultural renaissance.?
All of this sounds beautiful in theory. Have a great idea for a new project? Simply sign up for Kickstarter and post a description (don't forget to make a glitzy video in support), set your fundraising target and the deadline, create a panoply of rewards tied to various contributions (for instance, $5 might get you the new CD, but $5,000 would also get you a dinner with the musician), and spread the word about the campaign. If you meet the fundraising target, Kickstarter takes a 5 percent cut and the project goes ahead?if you don?t, no money changes hands. The platform is enjoying tremendous success: Earlier this year, one of its founders proclaimed?to some controversy?that in 2012 Kickstarter might distribute more money ($150 million) than the National Endowment for the Arts (its budget for the year is $146 million).?
Such phenomenal success has attracted its fair share of criticisms. Some, like NPR, have bashed Kickstarter for being rather opaque about how it deals with projects that, once funded, provide few (or questionable) updates on their progress, face significant delays, or never deliver at all. Those aren't few: A recent study from the University of Pennsylvania looked at 47,000 Kickstarter projects and found that more than 75 percent deliver with delays. It's hard to say how many projects never deliver, as for Kickstarter ?never? is a rather flexible term: Instead of acknowledging failure, many doomed projects simply drag on indefinitely, providing no updates and constantly postponing the launch date.
Delays are particularly common among projects that go viral and raise far more money than originally planned. Kickstarter has few incentives to safeguard such projects from their own viral success: The organization takes a cut from all money raised. And while Kickstarter expects that projects that don't deliver will eventually compensate their backers, it has no way to enforce such a policy.
As the projects advertised on Kickstarter move beyond entertainment and start tackling problems like urbanism and designing more livable cities, it's no longer enough to evaluate them solely in aesthetic and functional terms. For example, architecture and design critic Alexandra Lange has taken issue with the narrow, gadget-driven approach to solving complex urban problems that Kickstarer encourages. ?You wouldn?t Kickstart a replacement bus line for Brooklyn, but you might Kickstart an app to tell you when the bus on another, less convenient line might come. You can?t Kickstart affordable housing, but the really cool tent for the discussion thereof,? wrote Lange in Design Observer. A community that is channeling its energy into crowdfunding a new urban park might be less prone to participate in the boring but consequential urban planning meetings at the local town hall.
All of these are substantial, potent criticisms, and the company has addressed at least some of them. But one of the assumptions that has mostly gone untested is that Kickstarter, with its great emancipatory potential to free creative artists from the shackles of the entertainment industry, would revitalize our culture, make it more diverse and less dependent on the conservative or greedy gatekeepers.
A new article in the latest issue of Media, Culture, and Society by the Danish academic Inge Ejbye S?rensen challenges this assumption and tells a more complex story about the impact of sites like Kickstarter on the culture industry. S?rensen studied how crowdfunding has affected documentary filmmaking in the United Kingdom. Britain stands out from other countries in that most of its documentaries are produced and fully funded by one of its four main broadcasters (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5) that dictate the terms to the filmmaker. In this context, crowfunding seems liberating, even revolutionary.
But, as S?rensen points out, this revolution has a few mitigating circumstances. First, Kickstarter might produce many new documentaries, but the odds are that those documentaries will be of a very particular kind (this critique also applies to other sites in this field like indiegogo.com, sponsume.com, crowdfunder.co.uk, pledgie.com). They are likely to be campaign and issue-driven films in the tradition of Super Size Me or An Inconvenient Truth. Their directors seek social change and tap into an online public that shares the documentary's activist agenda. A documentary exploring the causes of World War I probably stands to receive less?if any?online funding than a documentary exploring the causes of climate change.
Second, some films require significant startup costs (think drama-documentaries or history movies) or involve considerable legal risks that may be hard to price and account for. Say you are making a film that includes an undercover investigation of the oil industry. When you have the BBC's lawyers backing you up, you'll probably take many more risks than when you are relying on crowdfunding. But if Kickstarter is your platform of choice, you'll probably forgo venturing into the thorny legal issues altogether.?
Both of these arguments show the danger of viewing the nimble and crowd-powered Kickstarter as an alternative (rather than a supplement!) to the behemoth that is the BBC. This might fit quite nicely with David Cameron's rhetoric of the ?Big Society??whereby individuals take on the roles formerly performed by public institutions?but it would be a mistake to treat the two approaches as producing the same content only through different means. Some content is just unlikely to get crowdfunded.

Impulse buying is costing Canadians thousands a ... - Financial Post
We?re really struggling to save money on a monthly basis
MONTREAL, Que. ? A majority of Canadians surveyed by the Bank of Montreal say they shop to cheer themselves up and mood-lifting impulse purchases cost Canadians $3,720 annually.
The Bank of Montreal poll found that 59% of those surveyed did impulse shopping and bought items like clothes and shoes and also treated themselves to eating out.
?We?re really struggling to save money on a monthly basis,? said Janet Peddigrew, district vice-president of midwestern Ontario at BMO.
Consumers have been spending more than they?ve been saving over the last 10 years, which is cause for concern, Peddigrew said.
?Those who answered the survey, the majority, said they would do it to cheer themselves up,? she said.
The survey found that 60% of Canadians did this kind of emotional shopping and 55% bought something they might not need because it was on sale.
On average, that amounts to $310 a month being spent on items that are wanted but not needed, according to the survey released on Tuesday.
Those surveyed believed they could save two-thirds of that amount if they made an effort to limit impulse spending, the bank said.
Peddigrew said setting a budget and using online tools to track spending can help keep impulse spending in check.
Peddigrew said not having enough savings can leave consumers caught short when an emergency arises, when they need to do a major home repair or when they lose their job.
The poll results come as Canadian debt-to-income ratios sit at a record 152% and top officials issue warnings to start paying down debt before interest rates rise.
There?s also an element of regret that comes with impulse shopping and in some cases, financial difficulties.
The survey found that more than half of respondents regretted their purchases and 43% sometimes spent more than they earned in a month. Another third of those surveyed had to borrow money or take out a loan to cover their impulse spending.
The consequences of impulse spending were more common among Canadians under 30 with one in three unable to afford something they needed because of spending on ?wants,? the survey said.
Men said they spent more than women on average, $414 versus $207 dollars but men tended to spend more on technology items, Peddigrew said.
BMO said its psychology of spending report is the first in a series that will examine personal finance and investing behaviours among Canadians.
The online survey was conducted by Pollara and interviewed 1,000 adults between Aug. 31 and Sept. 5. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.

NKorean parliament holds second session this year
PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? North Korea's parliament convened Tuesday for the second time in six months, passing a law that adds one year of compulsory education for children in the socialist nation, the first publicly announced policy change under leader Kim Jong Un.
The Supreme People's Assembly's second meeting of the year was notable mainly as a departure from how Kim's father did business. Before he died in December, Kim Jong Il convened his legislature just once in most years, and during one three-year period after his own father's death it didn't meet at all.
By adding a year to North Korea's state-funded educational system, from 11 to 12 years, Kim may be trying to cultivate loyalty among younger generations as he consolidates his power base.
Kim Jong Un himself attended Tuesday's session, which was adjourned after a single day, according to the official Korean Central News Agency. Foreign reporters were denied access. Video on state TV showed legislators, many of the women in traditional Korean dresses, holding up deputy badges in the vast Mansudae Assembly Hall.
North Korea's Constitution allows political parties, but politics is overwhelmingly dominated by the Workers' Party, founded by Kim Il Sung, grandfather of the current ruler. Virtually all legislators are members of the Kims' party who ran unopposed in the last nationwide election, leading many outside observers to consider the body a rubber stamp for the regime's policies. A few legislators are from the Chondoist Chongu Party and the Social Democratic Party, both believed to government aligned.
Here's a look at the Supreme People's Assembly and how it works:
? The current 12th parliament formed in 2009 has 687 legislators, or deputies, of which 107 are women. The number of deputies is determined by the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly in proportion to the country's population.
? The assembly meets at the austere Mansudae Assembly Hall in the capital, Pyongyang.
? Deputies are elected after a committee of more than 100 people from each district recommends candidates to represent the constituency in the parliament. Even though the law provides no limits on the number of candidates who can run from each district, almost all candidates ran unopposed in the last election in March 2009.
? According to Kim Song Chun, a parliamentary official, deputies meet to discuss and pass laws and establish the country's domestic and foreign policies. They also can appoint or dismiss officials at top state organizations and confer titles. For example, at the last session in April, Kim Jong Un was made first chairman of the powerful National Defense Commission.
Holding a second parliamentary session could mark a return to the more active role that parliament played under Kim Il Sung, who often held two sessions a year, said John Delury of Yonsei University in South Korea. Parliament typically met only once a year under Kim Jong Il.
"This was part of a general trend under Kim Jong Il of holding less frequent and less regular meetings of key party and government organs," Delury said. "The striking thing is that Kim Jong Un seems to be reversing that trend by regularizing and re-institutionalizing governance."

Scientists Speak Out Against Wasting Helium In Balloons
This is just a small item, but it goes to a bigger theme, as a 26 year old, I have been told that I cant have a nice life style because its bad for earth or a waste of resources or bad for your health.
Because of cow pies, we are supposed to eat less red meat, or ideally none at al!
because of global warming (which I do think is real), Im supposed to drive a tiny little car that has a hard time going over 60 MPH
Because of health concerns, I shouldn't salt my food to taste, or eat sugary treats,
Because of speculation in the market and salarys not going up with inflation, the nice home that cost my parents the equivalent of about 2 years post tax post med insurance take home pay will now cost me 4 years of the same.
And now I cant even get my kid a ballon for their birthday? What the fuck is this? Its almost like the west is becoming the new third world. I just want a decent life like my parents and their parents had. The sickest part is the people telling us we shouldn't have the good life use exotic luxuries private jets and limos. Its an outrage!

Killed by Obama's Touch ? Three Recent Deaths in Serving the ...
One man was killed when a pickup truck ran him over on a highway in Florida. Another died when Libyan rebels attacked his compound with grenades and machine guns. What do these two deaths have in common? Both occurred in the past few weeks and both involved people serving the President. And then there is the Ohio great grandmother who had a heart attack after President Obama was served eggs and bacon at her 24-hour diner. It all goes to show that working for the President, whether it be directing traffic, negotiating with rebel armies or serving him breakfast can be a deadly job.
Other Great Reads: How to plan a funeral, from A to Z
U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens was killed two weeks ago when rebels attacked the American Consulate in Benghazi, Libya with grenade launchers and machine guns. ?His legacy will endure wherever human beings reach for liberty and justice,? said President Obama. ?I am profoundly grateful for his service to my administration, and deeply saddened by this loss.? Stevens grew up in northern California and attended the University of California, Berkeley then joined the Peace Corps, where he worked for two years as an English teacher in a remote town in Morocco's Atlas Mountains. Later, he attended law school and the National War College. In 1991, he joined the Foreign Service, receiving postings in volatile locations across the Middle East and northern Africa, such as Syria, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. From 2007 to 2009, during the rule of Moammar Gadhafi, Stevens served as the deputy chief of the U.S. mission to Libya. ?He was the best of the best,? a colleague who worked with him in Israel told CNN.
In 2011, with the Arab Spring heating up and Libya in turmoil, Stevens was tapped by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to serve as the American envoy to the rebel opposition. He arrived on a cargo ship in the port of Benghazi and began building relationships with the revolutionaries who would eventually oust Gadhafi and take over the country. ?Everywhere Chris and his team went in Libya they were hailed as friends and partners,? said Clinton. But one night two weeks ago militants wielding machine guns and rocket propelled grenades raided the consulate, shooting dead three Americans and setting fire to the compound. Stevens was rushed to the hospital, where a Libyan doctor tried for 90 minutes to revive him. In the end it was impossible, he died of severe asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation.
Just days earlier, another officer died in a very different line of presidential duty.? Obama's motorcade was traveling along I-95 to a Florida campaign event and Bruce St. Laurent, of?Jupiter, Florida, had been stationed ahead to help shut down the highway. He was struck and killed by a Ford F-150 pickup truck. It sounds benign but directing traffic is a lethal job for cops. Traffic fatalities were the leading cause of death for officers killed in the line of duty for 13 of the past 14 years, according to a spokesman for the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. And presidential motorcades are particularly tricky. Officers must ?leap-frog? down a highway, quickly closing down sections of roadway then rushing past the president's car to establish new roadblocks further ahead. More than a thousand police officers attended St. Laurent's funeral. In order to honor him, Florida Governor Rick Scott had the lighthouse in the town where he had served illuminated in blue.
Other Great Reads: The deadly world of funeral processions
You might expect directing highway traffic or serving in the foreign legion to be dangerous but serving Obama breakfast? On Friday July 6, the President stopped by Ann's Place 24-Hour Restaurant in Akron, Ohio and ordered eggs, bacon and wheat toast. When his server suggested he try the grits, President Obama ordered some of that as well. The restaurant's owner, 70 year old Josephine "Ann" Harris, along with her daughter and granddaughter, who both work at the restaurant, greeted the President. But Josephine wasn't in top form, back in January she suffered a fall and shortly thereafter she had a heart attack, a stroke then another heart attack. Josephine spoke with President Obama inside the restaurant then joined him after breakfast for a family photo. ?He treated us like one of the brothers,? she told reporters. ?He hugged all of us.?
Back at home a few hours later Josephine complained of fatigue and a tingling feeling. She was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead from a heart attack. Her family was sad for the death but happy she got to meet the President before she passed. ?I'm sure this was her highlight,? said her sister. ?She loved Obama.?

Manually update your Verizon Galaxy Nexus to the official Jelly Bean build
You've been waiting since July for some Jelly Bean on your Verizon Galaxy Nexus, and you just can't wait any longer. It's pushing out as we speak, but who knows when it will make it to your device. There's no way in hell you're going to sit one more day and read about everyone enjoying Jelly Bean while you mash the button to check for updates. We got ya.
The good news is you don't have to wait. The easy to unlock bootloader on the Nexus means it's relatively easy to flash the update yourself, and you too can join in the Jelly-fest. (I'm trade marking Jelly-fest, BTW). You'll need to be running a stock build, and have all the right tools, but thankfully the fellows in the Verizon Nexus forums have you covered.
They'll have you up and running in no time with clear and simple directions, and they're there to answer any and all questions should something go haywire. Click the link, grab your cable, and don't forgot to thank the dedicated folks who took the time to put this one together.

Libyan Islamist militia swept out of Benghazi bases
BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - A Libyan Islamist militia was swept out of the eastern city of Benghazi in a popular protest against the armed groups that ran into the early hours of Saturday morning, Reuters witnesses said.
At least one person was killed and 20 wounded, a hospital source said, as militias tried to fight the demonstrators from a heavily fortified base. Gunfire could be heard in the area before the fighters were forced out.
Looters carried weapons out of the vacated Ansar al-Sharia military base compound as men clapped and chanted: "Say to Ansar al-Sharia, Benghazi will be your inferno."
Ansar al-Sharia has been linked to the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi last week in which the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans died. It denies involvement.
The action against the group appeared to be part of a coordinated sweep of militia headquarters buildings by police, government troops and activists following a mass public demonstration against militia units on Friday.
Chanting "Libya, Libya," hundreds of demonstrators entered, pulling down militia flags and torching a vehicle inside Ansar al-Sharia's headquarters in Benghazi - once the base of forces of former leader Muammar Gaddafi, which tried to put down the first protests that sparked last year's uprising.
The crowd waved swords and even a meat cleaver, crying "No more al Qaeda!" and "The blood we shed for freedom shall not go in vain!"
"After what happened at the American consulate, the people of Benghazi had enough of the extremists," demonstrator Hassan Ahmed said. "They did not give allegiance to the army. So the people broke in and they fled."
"This place is like the Bastille. This is where Gaddafi controlled Libya from, and then Ansar al-Sharia took it over. This is a turning point for the people of Benghazi."
Adusalam al-Tarhouni, a government worker, who arrived with the first wave of protesters, said several pickup trucks with the group's fighters had initially confronted the protesters and opened fire. Two protesters were shot in the leg, he said.
"After that they got into their trucks and drove away," he said, adding protesters had freed four prisoners found inside.
As protesters left Ansar al-Sharia's headquarters, the crowd swelled, reaching thousands as it headed toward its military base, which was shared with another militia group.
Protesters said the militiamen opened fire as they arrived and several people were wounded.
"We came as peaceful protesters. When we got there they started shooting at us," student Sanad al-Barani said. "Five people were wounded beside me. They used 14.5 caliber machine guns."
After the crowd entered that compound, Libyan army trucks sped away from the base carrying government troops cheering in victory and crying out, "God is greatest."
Vigilantes armed with machetes and clubs blocked the highway leading away from the compound, stopping cars to prevent looters from driving off with heavy weapons.
"We went into the camp and we didn't find anyone. We just took these Kalashnikovs," said one youth, holding rifles.
The demonstrators also took over a compound belonging to the Abu Slim brigade and another Ansar al-Sharia compound.
"RESCUE BENGHAZI"
Thousands of Libyans had marched in Benghazi on Friday in support of democracy and against the Islamist militias that Washington blames for the assault on its consulate. Hundreds of Ansar al-Sharia supporters held their own protest.
Friday's "Rescue Benghazi day" demonstration called for the government to disband armed groups that have refused to give up their weapons since the NATO-backed revolution last year.
"It's obvious that this protest is against the militias. All of them should join the army or security forces as individuals, not as groups," student Ahmed Sanallah said. "Without that there will be no prosperity and no success for the new Libya."
Although the main demands of the marchers did not mention the attack on the U.S. consulate, it seems to have provided a strong impetus for the authorities to rally support behind the country's weak government.
U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens was well liked, and many Libyans condemned the attack on the consulate despite being angered by the anti-Islamic U.S.-made film that triggered it.
Some protesters' placards read: "We demand justice for Stevens" and "Libya lost a friend." Others had mixed views.
"I am out today to defend Benghazi. Killing the ambassador is a completely separate thing," said 26-year-old Amjad Mohammed Hassan, a network engineer. "I don't give a damn about the killing of the ambassador because the Americans offended the Prophet. I am just here for Benghazi."
Benghazi, 1,000 km (600 miles) from Tripoli across largely empty desert, is controlled by various armed groups, including some comprised of Islamists who openly proclaim their hostility to democratic government and the West.
Some are identified by local people as being among those who were at the consulate protest last week. U.S. officials have described the violence as a "terrorist attack."
Abu Al-Qaa, a demonstrator at the Ansar al-Sharia demonstration, said Stevens had been "preparing for the entry of American troops into Libya."
"The will of the Prophet was to expel infidels from Muslim lands so that Muslims prevail. Terrorizing your enemy is one of Islam's tenets." He said he had fought U.S. troops in Iraq where he was arrested, sent back to Libya and jailed for three years.
One banner at the Ansar al-Sharia demonstration read: "Day to rescue Benghazi or day to rescue America?"
