The FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION has OK'd a SONY-led group's purchase of EMI MUSIC PUBLISHING, without having to make any divestitures. THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE reports "U.S. antitrust regulators gave the nod to the $2.2 billion deal in a brief letter to the companies."

In its ruling, the FTC said that it looked at the transaction but "upon review found no reason for further action. Accordingly, the investigation has been closed," the FTC said in its letter to SONY.

"Music publishing, along with the rest of our entertainment companies, has been a bright spot in our business portfolio, and we expect that trend to continue with this important acquisition," said SONY CORPORATION Pres./CEO KAZUO HIRAI. "Through our SONY/ATV MUSIC PUBLISHING joint venture with the Estate of MICHAEL JACKSON, SONY has become the world's preeminent music publishing operation, administering the most prolific and diverse catalog in the world."

SONY/ATV MUSIC PUBLISHING Chairman/CEO MARTIN BANDIER added, "Today is a truly special day. For me, the best part of being in the music publishing business has always been the opportunity to be associated with talented songwriters and great songs. As I become reunited with the company that has many of the greatest songwriters and songs of all time, I look forward to helping create the best music publishing company in the world, with the extraordinary talent -- artists, songwriters and staff -- at the combined SONY/ATV and EMI."

The investor group is comprised of SONY CORPORATION OF AMERICA, the Estate of MICHAEL JACKSON, MUBADALA DEVELOPMENT COMPANY PJSC, JYNWEL CAPITAL LIMITED, THE BLACKSTONE GROUP's GSO CAPITAL PARTNERS LP and DAVID GEFFEN. SONY/ATV MUSIC PUBLISHING, a joint venture between SONY and the Estate of MICHAEL JACKSON, will administer EMI MUSIC PUBLISHING on behalf of the investor group.

The EUROPEAN UNION?approved a SONY-led consortium's purchase of EMI PUBLISHING for $2.2 billion in APRIL (NET NEWS 4/19).

The more contentious battle continues over UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP's plan to buy EMI MUSIC for $1.9 billion. The FTC is expected to rule on that in the coming months.

New York Homeless Youth Budget Restored But Worries Linger

NEW YORK -- On Tuesday afternoon, a dozen or so young people milled around a crowded reception room at the Ali Forney Center, an organization that provides housing for the city's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender homeless youth.

They waited for a shower, a sandwich, an AIDS test or an art therapy session. Most of all, they waited for a bed.

Paris Perez, 21, a transgender woman who has been homeless for about two and a half years, could barely conceal her excitement. On Tuesday morning she learned that after a six's month wait, she had moved off the waiting list. For the next six months, she would be able to sleep in one of the center's 77 beds. "I'm trying to be normal now, but when I get out of here I'm going to be running in the streets screaming," Perez said.

Also on Tuesday, City Councilman Lewis Fidler told The Huffington Post that $7 million in cuts to homeless youth services will be restored to next year's budget to match the previous year's funding. The mayor's initial proposed budget would have cut 60 percent from the current funding for homeless youth services, eliminating about 160 of 259 shelter beds. The budget will be voted on later this week by the City Council.

Homeless youth advocates, who protested the cuts last month in front of City Hall, breathed a partial sigh of relief.

"In terms of my terror that we would lose beds, I'm grateful that that's not the case," said Carl Siciliano, executive director of the Ali Forney Center. "But on a deeper level, you know, I'm turning away kids every day who have nowhere to stay. Most of them turn to prostitution; enormous numbers are being infected with AIDS."

The city has 4,000 homeless youth, according to the latest estimate, and funds shelter beds for just 10 percent of them, Siciliano said. Waiting lists are growing, especially at centers like Ali Forney that cater to LGBT youth, who make up about 40 percent of New York City's homeless young people. At the Ali Forney Center, the waiting list increased by 199 individuals last year, a 40 percent increase over the previous year's.

Siciliano is the leader of the Campaign for Youth Shelter, a coalition of LGBT providers and advocates that called on the city last month to restore $7 million sliced from the 2013 budget proposal, plus add an additional $3 million in funds to finance 100 new shelter beds. Fidler, who chairs the Council's Youth Services Committee, said he pushed for the additional funds, to no avail. "To the last breath I told them, if there's any money lying on the table someplace, that's where they should put it," he said.

One of the few budget areas in the city slated to receive additional funding were child care and after-school programs, according to Fidler.

"I'm satisfied at least that we didn't take a step backwards," Fidler said. Ultimately, strong after-school and child-care programs can reduce the need for homeless services, by catching family problems early on and by providing kids with more structured lives after classes end, Fidler said.

Many of the young people at Ali Forney became homeless after coming out to their parents. When Perez told her mom she was transgender, her mother left their Brooklyn apartment and moved with her younger sister to Pennsylvania, leaving behind Perez to fend for herself. "She couldn't deal with it," said Perez, shrugging.

Afterward, Perez couch surfed for a couple of months. When she couldn't find a couch, she slept on the A train, the roof of a friend's building or in city parks. Recently she has been staying at a shelter that doesn't specialize in gay youth, where staffers referred to her by her "government-issued name and 'he,'" Perez said.

At Ali Forney, it's a different world, Perez said, pointing to the art covering the walls of one room. During an art therapy class, participants in programs -- even those who don't have a shelter bed -- can work on art projects to "vent it out," as Perez put it. Colorful abstract drawings, cardboard cutouts and a paper totem pole lined the walls. "It's just so good to see that the staff actually takes the time to keep your stuff," Perez said.

When asked about the city's budget, Perez raised her arms in exasperation. "You see a problem, and we know how it's going to be fixed: beds," she said. Perez has recently begun classes at a beauty school and hopes to graduate so she can find a job and make it on her own. "That bed makes a whole complete difference. When I'm in a bed, I can wake up recharged and go out and apply for a job. Without a bed..." she paused and sunk into silence.

Glasenberg's dealmaker renown at mercy of Qatar

LONDON (Reuters) - By rejecting Glencore's coveted acquisition of miner Xstrata , Qatar could also put paid to the reputation of Ivan Glasenberg, chief executive of the commodities trader, as consummate dealmaker.

Those who have worked with him on takeovers - and against him defending the companies he targeted - say Glasenberg's self-belief is second to none. That, plus unbending determination, means he normally gets his way.

But this time he appears to have been wrong-footed, thinking the support of major Xstrata shareholder Qatar Holdings was in the bag.

"Did Glencore misread the Qataris? Absolutely," said one banker familiar with the mining sector, but not involved in the deal. "Qatar does not like the limelight, so they must feel pretty strongly to end up going public."

Apparently undeterred by the rejection, Glasenberg showed little relish for compromise, letting it be known he would not overpay.

Glencore's position had not changed, a person familiar with the matter said, and the company would rather walk away than offer more. Bankers said such talk was a standard M&A tactic and to be expected of any company in such negotiations.

It is not only Glasenberg's track record that is under the microscope following Qatar Holdings' surprise demand for better terms for the takeover. The bankers advising him may also have been caught napping.

The stakes are high for all involved, with banking teams working on the deal standing to lose out on a pay day worth up to $130 million if the $26 billion deal collapses. Xstrata was due to pay up to $80 million to its financial advisers, while Glencore may have to shell out up to $50 million.

With fee income in retreat after a 25 percent fall in worldwide M&A volumes in the first half of the year, such pay days are more important than ever for bankers struggling to bring in revenue for their increasingly cost-conscious employers.

The combination of Glencore and Xstrata would rank as the biggest-ever done deal in a sector littered with the skeletons of failed deals. These include the $144.5 billion hostile bid for Rio Tinto by BHP Billiton in 2008, and BHP Billiton's more recent $39.7 billion offer for Canada's Potash .

Glasenberg is not the only executive to have been exposed by the failure to get "Glenstrata" blessed by shareholders.

His opposite number at Xstrata, CEO Mick Davis, was not listening to the mood music over executive pay when he secured himself a $45 million three-year retention package to seal the miner's deal with Glencore. The mining group was forced to convert it to an all-share, performance-related package after an embarrassing shareholder outcry.

Qatar Holdings, which has remained silent for months as it built up the second-largest stake in miner Xstrata - about 11 percent - pushed the deal to the brink on Tuesday, demanding better terms before it would support the deal.

The wealth fund is part of a new breed of investors in the mining sector, focused on creating long-term value and acting on motivations that are sometimes at odds with a more numerous body of investors looking at a shorter timeframe.

Despite the apparent blow to Glasenberg's plans, hedge fund managers said it was too soon to say he had been outwitted by the Qataris.

"Glasenberg is always the smartest man in the room and always one step ahead of everyone. We don't know what is going on behind closed doors," a hedge fund manager who owns Xstrata stock said.

"Hedge funds always think they are smarter than the chief executive, but not when it comes to Ivan," he added.

A second hedge fund manager said Glasenberg would do whatever was in the best interests of Glencore, whether that was to stump up more or let the deal die.

"He is one of the most capitalist individuals I have ever seen. He will change what he needs to change to get the best outcome," the second hedge fund manager said.

BANKING ON A DEAL

The deal was already proving difficult for bankers before the Qatari move. They are facing lower fees due to the unique role of former Citigroup grandee turned independent go-between Michael Klein.

It was Klein's ability to get Glasenberg and arch-rival Mick Davis to agree on a valuation that put the deal on the table. Klein is expected to earn between $10 million and $15 million for his work and could be called upon to help smooth out the latest wrinkle, sources said.

Klein's slice of the fees will mean less for Citigroup, Morgan Stanley , Credit Suisse and BNP Paribas, Glencore's advisers.

Deutsche Bank , JP Morgan , Goldman Sachs , Nomura and Barclays , advisers for Xstrata, will also receive a smaller proportion because of Klein's intervention.

London's "mining king", Ian Hannam, the veteran rainmaker who resigned from JP Morgan last month to fight a 450,000-pound fine imposed by British regulators for passing on inside information, is also involved in the transaction, and teams at Citigroup and Morgan Stanley include veteran UK advisers David Wormsley and Simon Robey, among the biggest names in corporate finance in the City of London.

With stakes so high, all will be banking on Glasenberg showing his usual ability for getting the deal done.

"Is he the smartest man in the room? Let's see where the deal goes," the second hedge fund manager said.

A Song of Ice and Fire

There had been a few RPs dedicated or formed out of the A Song of Ice and Fire Series.
If you have read the books or watched the TV series you are safe to join. This is merely an rp that will be molded out of the place of Westeros and Pentos.
I will be needing your insights and suggestions to further improve the RP but here are some ideas that might be incorporated with in the RP itself.
Do note that Marriage/s (arranged or not) is greatly welcomed but keep off the whole romantic notions out of the RP. Not that I hate romance but I intend for this RP to be more of other feelings (like honor, hate, triumph, etc) rather than googly lovey dovey characters alone.

Often than not, RPs that have too much romance and partnership tend to isolate some characters while killing all the creativeness of the Rpers thus killing the RP.

I want sword fighting, personal ambitions and family to be abundant in the story. This is an RP loosely based on the real story not a romantic fairytale- so don't tell me that I didn't warn you.

So here goes nothing;
The RP itself might start from the following ideas:

1. 70 long winters and 70 short and long summers, the world of Westeros has already been cured from the wounds of the great war since the death of the late Usurper, Robert Baratheon. (Assuming that Daenerys got the throne back ruling the Southern part while the Starks kept the North, Pentos was granted to the Greyjoys and the Arryns kept the Eyrie) and the Great Wall of the North had completely crumbled to the last rock standing.

It was said that the peace became the binding power for the people but Queen Daenerys (aged 80 or 90+) soon reached her death bed without an heir which has once again sparked the ambitions of Lords to take control of the South, knowing that the Starks has no power in the lower region- why should they? When they only rule the North?

---
So assuming that the current king/queen of the North is the grandchild (or great grandchild) of Robb/ Sansa/ Arya/ Rickon Stark. Ruling over the North when Daenerys Targaryen's life is soon to be taken from her- no heir in line. Different houses offer their services to take over the South- should the Ruler of the North interfere or let the various Houses fight for the throne of the South?

2. Septa Colette tells stories to the young boys of House Jaculus of the stories that once happened to Westeros hundreds of years, it involved Dragons and Wolves big as bears and a war that beheaded thousands of people just for the Throne made of swords. It was a story that Septa Colette told the children whenever they ask for the horrific stories before bed.

House Jaculus is now blessed with 2 sons (Heron and Soren) of Lord Draco Jaculus and Lady Silene Gurges- Jaculus. It is widely known that Lord Draco had taken his seat as the King's hand just as the new king took the Crystal Throne.

The rightful and new King Sal Gurges had taken over the Crystal Throne a few days after his father's death, the late King Pontus.

His wife, Queen Gertrude Bronte- Gurges has given birth twin boys and a girl, Sol, Slynt and Gerona, but died shortly after giving birth to the girl.

Now that the twin boys have reached the age of 16 while the little girl had turned to a beautiful lady of 14, the Kingdom is celebrating good harvest and peaceful keeping of the Kingdom until the wildlings had decided to come together and destroy the peace.

They are now called the Army of SAEVUS, with the help of a few ostracized men who formed a group and fled the Night's Watch. They were lead by the one they used to call the Black Knight- Caligo.

Eating garbage: Bacteria for bioremediation

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? A 150-foot-high garbage dump in Colombia, South America, may have new life as a public park. Researchers at the University of Illinois have demonstrated that bacteria found in the dump can be used to neutralize the contaminants in the soil.

Jerry Sims, a U of I associate professor of crop sciences and USDA-Agricultural Research Service research leader and Andres Gomez, a graduate student from Medell?n, Colombia, have been working on a landfill called "El Morro" in the Moravia Hill neighborhood of Medell?n, which served as the city dump from 1972 to 1984. In that period, thousands of people came to the city from the rural areas to escape diverse social problems. There was no housing or employment for them, so they made a living picking up trash from this dump and built their homes upon it.

"There are some frightening pictures of this site on the Internet," said Sims. "At one point, close to 50,000 people lived there. They grew vegetables on the contaminated soil and hand-pumped drinking water out of the garbage hill."

In recent years, the Colombian government decided to relocate the people to different neighborhoods with better conditions. Then they decided to see if it was possible to clean up the area and turn it into a park. Unfortunately, the most reliable solution -- digging up the garbage and treating it -- is not economically feasible in Colombia.

Another problem was that there were no records of exactly what was in the dump.

"Apparently, hydrocarbon compounds were one of the main sources of contamination," said Gomez. "Phenyls, chlorinated biphenyls, and all kinds of compounds that are sometimes very difficult to clean up."

Three professors from The National University of Colombia in Medellin -- Hernan Martinez, Gloria Cadavid-Restrepo and Claudia Moreno -- considered a microbial ecology approach. They designed an experiment to determine whether bioremediation, which uses biological agents such as bacteria or plants to remove or neutralize contaminants, could be used to clean the site.

Gomez, who was working on his master's thesis at the time, collaborated with them. He was charged with finding out if there were microorganisms living in the soil that could feed on the carbon in the most challenging contaminants.

This was not a trivial task. As Sims explained, "There are maybe 10,000 species of bacteria and a similar number of fungi in a gram of soil."

Gomez's work was further complicated by the fact that the material in the hill was loose and porous with air spaces and voids that resulted from dirt being thrown over layers of garbage. Because of the unusual physical structure and the contaminant levels, it was unclear if the indigenous bacterial community would be as complex, and thus as effective at bioremediation, as those normally found in soils.

Gomez analyzed bacteria at different depths in the hill down to 30 meters. He found microbial communities that appeared to have profiles typical of bacteria involved in bioremediation. The communities seemed to contain a robust set of many organisms that could be expected to weather environmental insults or manipulations.

Gomez then came to Sims's lab at the U of I on a grant from the American Society for Microbiology to perform stable isotope probing, a test to link diversity and function that he was not able to do in Colombia. Contaminants are labeled with a heavy isotope that serves as a tracer that can be detected in the end products of biodegradation.

His results confirmed that the bacterial communities had, in fact, been carrying out bioremediation functions. In collaboration with assistant professor of microbial ecology Tony Yannarell who assisted with the microbial diversity analysis, he determined that the organisms involved changed at every depth.

Based on these results, the Colombian government decided to go ahead with the bioremediation project using the indigenous organisms. One of the professors who worked on the pilot study is looking at ways to provide the microorganisms with extra nutrients to speed up the process. Another project takes a phytoremediation approach, which uses plants to absorb heavy metals.

Gomez has gone back to his first love, animal microbiology. While he was at U of I, he met animal sciences professor Bryan White and is now working on a Ph.D. studying the microflora of primates.

Rhode Island Hospital study takes next step in breaking brain's cycle of creating toxins that cause Alzheimer's to progress

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Rhode Island Hospital researcher Suzanne de la Monte, M.D., has found a link between brain insulin resistance (diabetes) and two other key mediators of neuronal injury that help Alzheimer's disease (AD) to propagate. The research found that once AD is established, therapeutic efforts must also work to reduce toxin production in the brain. The study, Dysfunctional Pro-Ceramide, ER Stress, and Insulin/IGF Signaling Networks with Progression of Alzheimer's Disease, is published in the June 22, 2012, supplement of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease is one of the most common degenerative dementias, and more than 115 million new cases are projected worldwide in the next 40 years. There is clinical and experimental evidence that treatment with insulin or insulin sensitizer agents can enhance cognitive function and in some circumstances help slow the rate of cognitive decline in AD. Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases destroy the brain until the patients finally succumb. In order to effectively halt the process of neurodegeneration, the forces that advance and perpetuate the disease, particularly with regard to the progressive worsening of brain insulin/IGF resistance, must be understood.

"Brain insulin resistance (diabetes) is very much like regular diabetes," de la Monte said. "Since the underlying problems continue to be just about the same, we believe that the development of new therapies would be applicable for all types of diabetes, including Alzheimer's disease, which we refer to as Type III diabetes."

She continued, "This study points out that once AD is established, therapeutic efforts should target several different pathwaysnot just one. The reason is that a positive feedback loop gets going, making AD progress. We have to break the vicious cycle. Restoring insulin responsiveness and insulin depletion will help, but we need to reduce brain stress and repair the metabolic problems that cause the brain to produce toxins."

Ultimately, these findings will help to expand ways to both detect and treat AD.

Growing evidence supports the concept that AD is fundamentally a metabolic syndrome that leads to abnormalities linked to brain insulin and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) resistance. In AD, brain insulin and IGF resistance and deficiencies begin early and worsen with severity of the disease. The rationale behind the progression of the disease is that insulin-resistance dysregulates lipid metabolism and promotes ceramide accumulation, thereby increasing inflammation and lipid metabolism, causing toxic ceramides to accumulate in the brain. The end result is increased stress that threatens the survival and function of neurons in the brain.

The present study was designed to gain a better understanding of how brain insulin resistance becomes progressive and contributes to the neurodegeneration in AD, focusing on the roles of ceramides and stress. The researchers studied the same brain samples used previously to demonstrate progressive impairments in brain insulin/IGF signaling with increasing severity of AD.

Experimental drug helps diabetes patients lose weight

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? An experimental drug helped significantly more overweight patients with diabetes shed pounds, compared with placebo, a new study finds. The results were presented June 23 at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"This new medication is promising because of the amount of weight loss it produces, the resultant improvement in important risk factors for diabetes, and, particularly in the lower dose studied, in its tolerability," said study lead author Donna H. Ryan, M.D., professor emeritus at Pennington Biomedical Research Center (LSU System) in Baton Rouge, LA.

Diabetes treatment involves weight management and medications to control blood-sugar levels and risk factors. If left untreated, diabetes can increase the danger of developing heart and blood-vessel diseases. Since one of the main risk factors for all of these diseases is obesity, weight loss is important to both prevention and treatment.

Focusing on type 2 diabetes, investigators found that patients who took the experimental weight-loss drug phentermine/topiramate, combined with diet and exercise modifications, were more likely to lose moderate amounts of weight than those who received a sugar-pill placebo and the diet and exercise intervention.

The percentage of study participants losing more than 10 percent of their initial weight while decreasing their blood pressure and hemoglobin A1c, was:

? 14 percent on low-dose phentermine/topiramate

? 31 percent on high-dose phentermine/topiramate

? 4 percent on placebo

Phentermine/topiramate is a combined medication that works by decreasing appetite. The main side effects associated with the drug were constipation and tingling sensations in the fingers. Patients who took phentermine/topiramate were also more likely to develop low blood sugar than those who received placebo.

This study was an analysis of diabetic patients who enrolled in weight-loss studies testing medications given with lifestyle intervention. Investigators randomly assigned 357 patients with type 2 diabetes to receive either low-dose phentermine/topiramate (7.5 milligrams), high-dose phentermine/topiramate (15 milligrams), or placebo. Neither investigators nor patients knew who was receiving the drug versus placebo in the double-blinded study. Participants' average age was 53 years, 66 percent were female, most were white, and their average weight was 222 pounds. Follow-up was one year.

VIVUS, the company that developed phentermine/topiramate, funded the study.

Argentina withdraws ambassador over Paraguay president's ouster

ASUNCION (Reuters) - Paraguay's new president said on Saturday he would ask his impeached predecessor to help quell regional tensions after Argentina withdrew its ambassador in protest at what it said was a coup and Brazil recalled its top diplomat for consultations.

Paraguay's South American neighbors and key trading partners are taking it to task for the unprecedented speed with which its opposition-dominated Congress removed President Fernando Lugo on Friday, saying he had failed to fulfill his duties to maintain social harmony.

A silver-haired former Roman Catholic bishop, Lugo was a year away from completing his five-year term. He decried the two-day impeachment trial but said he accepted the decision and stepped down.

He spoke to reporters outside his home on Saturday night, saying he was toppled by a "a congressional coup" and that Paraguay was now facing isolation.

The new president, Federico Franco, planned to speak to Lugo to help ease relations with other governments in the region. "I think he is the key to decompressing (the situation)."

Franco had been Lugo's vice president but was a fierce critic and his Liberal Party withdrew its support for Lugo last week, paving the way for the swift impeachment trial.

"I'm going to speak with him myself," Franco, a 49-year-old doctor, said in an interview with Reuters. He was sworn in on Friday shortly after Lugo was ousted.

The impeachment was sparked by clashes that killed 17 police and peasant farmers during a recent land eviction.

Critics of the impeachment complained that Lugo's lawyers had only a few hours to defend him in the Senate, which voted 39-4 in favor of his removal.

Argentina ordered the immediate withdrawal of its ambassador from Paraguay due to "rupture of the democratic order."

The move came a day after Argentine President Cristina Fernandez described Lugo's ouster as a coup. She also warned that measures could be adopted against Paraguay within the Mercosur trade bloc, which groups Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. In theory, this could include suspension for violating Mercosur's democratic principles.

Brazil on Saturday called its ambassador in Paraguay home for consultations. It "condemned" Lugo's removal because he was not able to defend himself properly, "compromising a fundamental pillar of democracy."

Brazil's government also said democracy was essential to regional integration and must be defended. Brazil is Paraguay's top trading partner and Latin America's biggest economy.

Uruguay - another member of Mercosur - urged Paraguay to call elections as soon as possible.

Peru and Mexico also questioned the speed of the process to remove Lugo from office, although Mexico recognized the legality of the impeachment process.

FRANCO DEFENDS IMPEACHMENT

Franco defended the impeachment and said he would work to convince Argentina to reinstate its ambassador.

"(Lugo) recognized he faced a tribunal, he recognized the tribunal's verdict and finally he agreed to step down. Even more importantly, he asked for people to remain peaceful so no more blood would be shed," Franco said.

Asuncion felt oddly normal on Saturday, with businesses opening as usual and few police officers patrolling the streets a day after they clashed briefly with protesters outside Congress.

Paraguay is one of South America's poorest countries and it has a long history of political instability and military rule.

The trial's speed raised concerns throughout the hemisphere. Leftist leaders in Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Cuba said they would not recognize the new administration and vowed to lobby for sanctions against Paraguay.

Brazil, which is a strategic ally to Paraguay, said it will not respond unilaterally and will seek consensus within the UNASUR group of South American nations.

About 100,000 Brazilians live in Paraguay - a landlocked, soy-exporting nation of 6 million people - and some of them own companies, large cattle ranches or soybean farms. The two countries jointly run the giant Itaipu hydroelectric dam.

"We will make contact with neighboring countries and I'm sure they will comprehend the situation in Paraguay," Franco told reporters earlier on Saturday. "At no time was there a rupture or a coup, there was simply a change of leadership in line with the constitution and the country's laws."

Introduction and Temporary History of Satellites and Communication ...

Introduction and Brief History of Satellites

A satellite is any object that orbits another object (which is known as its primary). All masses that are part of the solar system, including the Earth, are satellites either of the Sun, or satellites of those objects, such as the Moon. It is not always a simple matter to decide which is the ?satellite? in a pair of bodies. Because all objects exert gravity, the motion of the primary object is also affected by the satellite. If two objects are ufficiently similar in mass, they are generally referred to as a binary system rather than a primary object and satellite. The general criterion for an object to be a satellite is that the center of mass of the two objects is inside the primary object. In popular usage, the term ?satellite? normally refers to an artificial satellite (a man-made object that orbits the Earth or another body).

In May, 1946, the Preliminary Design of an Experimental World-Circling Spaceship stated, ?A satellite vehicle with appropriate instrumentation can be expected to be one of the most potent scientific tools of the Twentieth Century. The achievement of a satellite craft would produce repercussions comparable to the explosion of the atomic bomb??

The space age began in 1946, as scientists began using captured German V-2 rockets to make measurements in the upper atmosphere. Before this period, scientists used balloons that went up to 30 km and radio waves to study the ionosphere. From 1946 to 1952, upper-atmosphere research was conducted using V-2s and Aerobee rockets. This allowed measurements of atmospheric pressure, density, and temperature up to 200 km. The U.S. had been considering launching orbital satellites since 1945 under the Bureau of Aeronautics of the United States Navy. The Air Force?s Project RAND eventually released the above report, but did not believe that the satellite was a potential military weapon; rather they considered it to be a tool for science, politics, and propaganda. Following pressure by the American Rocket Society, the National Science Foundation, and the International Geophysical Year, military interest picked up and in early 1955 the Air Force and Navy were working on Project Orbiter, which involved using a Jupiter C rocket to launch a small satellite called Explorer 1 on January 31, 1958.

On July 29, 1955, the White House announced that the U.S. intended to launch satellites by the spring of 1958. This became known as Project Vanguard. On July 31, the Soviets announced that they intended to launch a satellite by the fall of 1957 and on October 4, 1957 Sputnik I was launched into orbit, which triggered the Space Race between the two nations.

The largest artificial satellite currently orbiting the earth is the International Space Station, which can sometimes be seen with the unaided human eye.

Types of satellites

? Astronomical satellites: These are satellites used for observation of distant planets, galaxies, and other outer space objects.

? Communications satellites: These are artificial satellites stationed in space for the purposes of telecommunications using radio at microwave frequencies. Most communications satellites use geosynchronous orbits or near-geostationary orbits, although some recent systems use low Earth-orbiting satellites.

? Earth observation satellites are satellites specifically designed to observe Earth from orbit, similar to reconnaissance satellites but intended for non-military uses such as environmental monitoring, meteorology, map making etc. (See especially Earth Observing System.)

? Navigation satellites are satellites which use radio time signals transmitted to enable mobile receivers on the ground to determine their exact location. The relatively clear line of sight between the satellites and receivers on the ground, combined with ever-improving electronics, allows satellite navigation systems to measure location to accuracies on the order of a few metres in real time.

? Reconnaissance satellites are Earth observation satellite or communications satellite deployed for military or intelligence applications. Little is known about the full power of these satellites, as governments who operate them usually keep information pertaining to their reconnaissance satellites classified.

? Solar power satellites are proposed satellites built in high Earth orbit that use microwave power transmission to beam solar power to very large antenna on Earth where it can be used in place of conventional power sources.

? Space stations are man-made structures that are designed for human beings to live on in outer space. A space station is distinguished from other manned spacecraft by its lack of major propulsion or landing facilities ? instead, other vehicles are used as transport to and from the station. Space stations are designed for medium-term living in orbit, for periods of weeks, months, or even years.

? Weather satellites are satellites that primarily are used to monitor the weather and/or climate of the Earth.

? Miniaturized satellites are satellites of unusually low weights and small sizes. New classifications are used to categorize these satellites: minisatellite (500-200 kg), microsatellite (below 200 kg), nanosatellite (below 10 kg).

Orbit types

Many times satellites are characterized by their orbit. Although a satellite may orbit at almost any height, satellites are commonly categorized by their altitude:

? Low Earth Orbit (LEO: 200 ? 1200km above the Earth?s surface)

? Medium Earth Orbit (ICO or MEO: 1200 ? 35286 km)

? Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO: 35786 km above Earth?s surface) and Geostationary Orbit ( zero inclination geosynchronous orbit). These orbits are of particular interest for communication satellites and will be discussed in detail later.

? High Earth Orbit (HEO: above 35786 km)

The following orbits are special orbits that are also used to categorize satellites:

? Molniya orbits: Is a class of a highly elliptic orbit. A satellite placed in this orbit spends most of its time over a designated area of the earth, a phenomenon known as apogee dwell. Molniya orbits are named after a series of Soviet/Russian Molniya communications satellites that have been using this class of orbits since the mid 1960s.

? Heliosynchronous or sun-synchronous orbit: A heliosynchronous orbit, or more commonly a sun-synchronous orbit is an orbit in which an object always passes over any given point of the Earth?s surface at the same local solar time. This is a useful characteristic for satellites that image the earth?s surface in visible or infrared wavelengths (e.g. weather, spy and remote sensing satellites).

? Polar orbit : A satellite in a polar orbit passes above or nearly above both poles of the planet (or other celestial body) on each revolution.

? Hohmann transfer orbit: For this particular orbit type, it is more common to identify the satellite as a spacecraft. In astronautics and aerospace engineering, the Hohmann transfer orbit is an orbital maneuver that moves a spacecraft from one orbit to another.

? Supersynchronous orbit or drift orbit : orbit above GEO. Satellites will drift in a westerly direction.

? Subsynchronous orbit or drift orbit: orbits close to but below GEO. Used for satellites undergoing station changes in an eastern direction.

Communication Satellites

A communications satellite (sometimes abbreviated to comsat) is an artificial satellite stationed in space for the purposes of telecommunications. Modern communications satellites use geosynchronous orbits, Molniya orbits or low Earth orbits.

For fixed services, communications satellites provide a technology complementary to that of fiber optic submarine communication cables. For mobile applications, such as communications to ships and planes satellite based communicationis only the viable means of communications as application of other technologies, such as cable, are impractical or impossible.

Early missions: The origin of satellite communication can be traced to an article written by Arthur C. Clarke in 1945. He suggested that a radio relay satellite in an equatorial orbit with a period of 24 hours would remain stationary with respect to earth?s surface and can be used for long-range radio communication, as it will over come the limitations imposed by earth curvature. Sputnik 1, The world?s first artificial (non communication) satellite, was launched on October 4, 1957. The first satellite to relay communications was Project SCORE in 1958, which used a tape recorder to store and forward voice messages. It was used to send a Christmas greeting to the world from President Eisenhower. NASA launched an Echo satellite in 1960. This 100-foot aluminized Mylar balloon served as a passive reflector for radio communications. Courier 1B, (built by Philco) also was launched in 1960, was the world?s first active repeater satellite. Given below are the details of milestones in satellite communcation history: -

? Herman Potocnik ? describes a space station in geosynchronous orbit ? 1928

? Arthur C. Clarke ? proposes a station in geosynchronous orbit to relay communications and broadcast television ? 1945

? Project SCORE ? first communications satellite ? 1958

? Echo I ? first passive reflector satellite ? August 1960

? Courier 1B ? first active repeater satellite ? October 1960

? Telstar ? the first active direct relay satellite designed to transmit television and high-speed data communications. Telstar was placed in an elliptical orbit (completed once every 2 hours and 37 minutes), rotating at a 45? angle above the equator. July 1962

? Syncom ? first communications satellite in geosynchronous orbit. Syncom 2 revolved around the earth once per day at constant speed, but

(AP) ? Even if Spain failed to live up to expectations, Xabi Alonso exceeded them.

The defending champions, who are trying to win a third straight major title, advanced to the European Championship semifinals with a not-so-commanding 2-0 win over France on Saturday. In the next round, Portugal and star player Cristiano Ronaldo could provide a much sterner test.

"These types of games, in this type of competition, are always very tense," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said of Saturday's win, "and you need to have the know-how to win them."

Alonso provided that.

The Real Madrid midfielder celebrated his 100th international appearance with an early header and a late penalty, a pair of rare goals from a player more accustomed to anchoring the back of the six-man midfield rather than pushing forward with the rest.

"I could never have imagined to reach my 100th cap, to go to the semis and score two goals," Alonso said. "Hopefully the 101st will be better."

Spain's next match will come on Wednesday against Portugal, again at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk. And with Ronaldo improving as the tournament progresses, Spain will likely have to improve as well to earn a chance to defend its title.

Saturday's opening goal was the result of excellent one-touch soccer ? the hallmark of Spain's game. Andres Iniesta prodded the ball through for Jordi Alba, who whipped a perfect cross from the left. Alonso timed his run so well that no France defender picked him up.

Spain wrapped things up after France right back Anthony Reveillere barged into substitute forward Pedro Rodriguez in injury time. Alonso coolly sent goalkeeper Hugo Lloris the wrong way from the spot, looking right but clipping the ball firmly to the left.

"He knows how to sacrifice himself, help the team and where to play," Del Bosque said of Alonso. "He is one of the attacking strengths of ours. He knows how to create and finish."

The win was Spain's first ever over France in a competitive match in seven attempts. But France wasn't that competitive Saturday, managing only one shot on target.

"When you lose a game there's always something missing, I'm not sure if it's possession or technical ability," France coach Laurent Blanc said. "The lads gave everything and it's very hard to play against Spain. We blocked their left flank, which is their strong point."

France's best moment came in the 32nd minute when Yohan Cabaye's free kick was tipped over by Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

"They were there for the taking," Blanc said. "We knew we would get some chances, and the only thing I regret is that they scored off their first good chance. If we had gone in level at 0-0 at halftime, then I think we would have had more room in the second half."

Although the French made it out of the group stage for the first time since the 2006 World Cup, the manner of Saturday's loss will be disappointing for a team touted as one of the tournament's dangerous outsiders.

France formed a deep defensive line and watched awe-struck as Spain flicked the ball around like a training session. The Spanish made dummy runs everywhere early on, and had a penalty claim waved away in the sixth minute when Cesc Fabregas tumbled under a challenge from left back Gael Clichy.

Fabregas also started against Italy in Spain's opening 1-1 draw, sparking criticism against Del Bosque for not picking a recognized striker. But against France, it worked.

Spain pulled a compact France team out of position in the 10th minute as Iniesta curled a ball behind center half Adil Rami but it was too far for Fabregas to reach.

Karim Benzema, looking for his first goal at a major tournament, looked sharp and made some good runs, but the Real Madrid striker rarely got any service. He was fouled in the 32nd after running onto Florent Malouda's pass, and Cabaye's free kick was sailing into the top left corner before Casillas shuffled across quickly to save it.

While the French averted a repeat of the 2010 World Cup crisis ? when the entire squad went on strike at training ? the buildup to Saturday's game was marred by tensions in the camp following a heated dressing room bust-up after the 2-0 loss to Sweden.

"The big teams have all showed up at this Euro, and they will be in the semifinals," Blanc said. "Unfortunately, France won't be."
