Where Are The Killer Apps For Windows 8 Metro?

8688.Start_Default_RTM_3ROW_thumb_4D391858Love it or hate it, but Windows 8 will soon arrive on computers around you. While virtually all of your old programs will likely run without a hitch in desktop mode, it's the Windows 8 Metro interface (or whatever Microsoft now wants to call it), that brings the biggest changes to the OS for users and developers alike. What Microsoft really needs right now more than anything else, though, is applications that can showcase the power of the new Windows 8 user interface. The current crop of apps in the Windows Store is a hodgepodge of games, travel and productivity apps that, for the most part, look fine but aren't very interesting (and that includes Microsoft's own default apps for Windows 8 Metro). What's still missing is a few killer apps for Windows 8 Metro that will get consumers interested in the platform.

Mayor's Cup: ?Nova in trouble once Owls hit ground running

Temple Owls defensive end Kadeem Custis (94) sacks Villanova Wildcats quarterback John Robertson (19) at Lincoln Financial Field. The Owls defeated the Wildcats, 41-10.

PHILADELPHIA ? During the offseason, Temple had to replace its offensive coordinator as well as four members of its starting offensive line.

Those changes, though, did not slow the Owls down one bit.

Kenneth Harper scored twice, and running back Matt Brown and quarterback Chris Coyer combined for more than 200 yards on the ground as the Owls cruised to a 41-10 victory over the Wildcats in the fourth annual Mayor?s Cup at Lincoln Financial Field Friday night.

?A lot of the basic part of the offense is the same,? Coyer said. ?We?ve added a few things, but the concepts are the same so we feel comfortable with it.?

The 32,709 spectators in attendance liked what they saw from Temple?s offense, especially its ground game. Of the 361 yards the Owls piled up, 301 came on the ground.

That was no surprise to Villanova coach Andy Talley.

?We knew they were going to pound the ball down our throats,? Talley said.

Most of that punishment was dealt by Brown, the smallest man in either starting lineup. The 5-5, 165-pound senior ran for 145 yards and one touchdown and had 270 all-purpose yards.

That was all part of the plan.

?We wanted to run the ball and we wanted to play well on special teams,? Temple coach Steve Addazio said. Continued...

The Owls accomplished both goals. In addition to Brown?s 125 return yards, kicker/punter Brandon McManus averaged 44.2 yards per punt and drilled a pair of field goals to etch his name in the Temple record book. He has 48 career field goals, the most in Temple history. McManus passed Bill Wright, who had 46 field goals in his career.

But while the special teams were solid, it was Temple?s running game that proved to be too much for the Wildcats, and Brown was the man Villanova could not contain. His only score, a 54-yard bolt with 21 seconds left in the first half, was a killer. It came four plays after Villanova quarterback John Robertson scored the first touchdown of his career to cut Temple?s lead to 21-10.

While Brown?s touchdown gave Temple and 18-point lead at the break, Talley saw another play as the one that decided the game in Temple?s favor.

?I think they broke our back with that 54-yard run back,? Talley said.

Talley was talking about Vaughn Carraway?s 57-yard interception return early in the second quarter, which gave the Owls a 14-3 advantage and also set in motion a game of musical quarterbacks by the Wildcats.

The interception was thrown by starter Chris Polony, but it was Polony?s feet, not his arm, that got him benched in favor of Robertson, a redshirt freshman whom Polony narrowly beat out for the starting job. The Wildcats needed a quarterback with a little more speed to avoid Temple?s rush and Robertson filled that bill and created a bit of a quarterback controversy.

?We have to look at that now,? Talley said. ?You can certainly see that (Robertson) is gifted at running the ball. He does not see as much in the passing game as Chris does so we will start to look at it. I don?t like to play two (quarterbacks), I really don?t. We were pretty set on Chris, but some things didn?t happen for him today. He was pressured a lot so we went with John. We?ll evaluate it this week.?

Robertson did look good, completing 9 of 17 passes for 135 yards and running 15 times for 78 yards.

?As the backup, you have to be ready to play at any time,? Robertson said. ?I knew I was going to play. There was a package put in for me so I was ready to play, but I didn?t expect to play as much as I did.?

As for Polony, he was disappointed, but ready to get back to work. Continued...

?I saw a lot of correctable mistakes,? Polony said. ?I look forward to getting ready for Fordham.?

The same can be said for the Owls.

?There?s always room to improve, that?s why we?ve got film (Saturday),? cornerback Anthony Robey said. ?We?ll go over our mistakes, cleanup what we messed up today and get ready for Maryland.?

Traumatic childhood may increase the risk of drug addiction

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2012) ? Previous research has shown that personality traits such as impulsivity or compulsiveness are indicators of an increased risk of addiction. Now, new research from the University of Cambridge suggests that these impulsive and compulsive personality traits are also associated with a traumatic upbringing during childhood. The study was published August 31, in the journal American Journal Psychiatry.

Led by Dr Karen Ersche, the Cambridge researchers aimed to identify risk factors that make a person vulnerable to developing drug dependence. They examined 50 adults with cocaine dependence together with their biological brothers and sisters who have never abused drugs. All participants underwent extensive assessments of their personalities, including their ways of feeling and thinking. The researchers were also interested in negative experiences that participants may have had during childhood (to include physical, emotional or sexual abuse).

Dr Ersche, of the Behavioural and Clinical Neuroscience Institute (BCNI) at the University of Cambridge, said: "It has long been known that abusive experiences during childhood have long-lasting effects on behaviour in adulthood and this was confirmed by our results. The siblings had more troubled childhoods compared to healthy peers in the community, and we also found a direct relationship between traumatic childhoods and their personalities."

She added: "This relationship is interesting because impulsive personality traits are known to increase the risk of becoming addicted to drugs but it is not an excuse for drug-taking."

The childhoods of the brothers and sisters of the cocaine-dependent individuals were also traumatic, and they also exhibited higher-than-normal levels of impulsive and compulsive behaviours, but they did not abuse drugs.

The researchers next intend to explore how the siblings who do not abuse drugs managed to deal with their traumatic childhoods and their highly impulsive and compulsive personalities. The scientists want to understand what makes the siblings resilient against addiction. A better understanding of what protected the brothers and sisters from drug abuse may provide vital clues for developing more effective therapeutic interventions for those trying to beat their addiction.

Dr Ersche added: "Not all individuals with these personality traits would have had a traumatic upbringing. Nor does everyone with these traits develop an addiction. However, our findings show that some people are particularly at risk and their upbringing may have contributed to it."

The study was funded by the Medical Research Council and conducted within the Behavioural and Clinical Neuroscience Institute at the University of Cambridge, which is co-funded by the MRC and the Wellcome Trust.
