Multiple lawsuits filed against Washington County school system over September bus crash

    Published October 23rd, 2012 8:52 pm

Seven lawsuits were filed late last week against the Washington County school district over a bus crash in September that injured 26 students.

Johnson City personal injury lawyer Tony Seaton confirmed he represents 12 students who were injured in the crash Sept. 20 on Mount Wesley Road when the driver, Brenda K. Gray, 54, of Jonesborough, lost control and went off the road.

The bus, which carried 39 David Crockett High School students ? including Gray?s son ? turned onto its side and rolled once, officials said.

Bob on Business Continuity: Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery ...

Developing business continuity and disaster recovery plans require a lot of time and effort to develop and test so they can be implemented immediately when needed. The goal, of course, is to prevent as many disruptions as possible and to be able to get up and running quickly if a disaster does occur. How well can your BC and DR plans meet these goals? Check out this issue for information that can help you improve and update your current plans.

These business issues are likely to have impacted (or will impact) business continuity planning. (Item #1) The legal issues involved in corporate contingency planning are some of the most misunderstood and confusing aspects of the entire process of creating a disaster recovery plan. (Item #2) Your ability to ensure the continuity of your company also depends on your willingness and ability to communicate your continuity wishes to those who will be affected. (Item #3)

Four reasons IT executives charged with business continuity planning, risk management and disaster recovery must consider their employees and operations heavily in their plans. (Item #4) A remote access solution must be intuitive and must take into account the increased need for security under business continuity conditions. (Item #5) Disaster recovery planning is affected by social, mobile, virtualization and cloud services. (Item #6)

Video Game News & Reviews - GAMEBREAKER.TV All Your ...

Mad King Thorn?hasn?t?been seen in 250 years and has become more of a character in a fairy tale story to amuse young children.? But those that know the truth realize that King Oswald Thorn?s past was no laughing matter.? As a child, his pranks included feeding peppers to animals in order to torture them.? He soon graduated to more despicable actions like luring his brother in a giant spider?s web.? As an adult, he killed his own father to ascend to throne and held extravagant feasts though the people of Kryta were suffering from famine. ?His laundry list of vile deeds steadily grew and included skinning villagers alive and marrying eight times, each with untimely and gruesome ends. ?An angry mob eventually overwhelmed the Mad King?s defenses and put a stop to his brutal rule.? The mob, however, was so enraged by his years of terror that they dismembered his body.

His spirit lives on in the Underworld, but fortunately?due to powerful magical seals?he is only able to materialize in Tyria once per year on Halloween.? The Mad King has foul servants, called the Lunatic Court, that seek to unmake the seals and set his evil spirit free.? Only one seal was ever known to be broken and the Mad King?s story has become a distant legend.? But this year?the 500th anniversary of the Mad King?s death?something feels different.? The scholars of the Durmond Priory sense that something is amiss and have dispatched some of their finest to research odd energy readings in Lion?s Arch.? What strange secrets will you help them uncover?

    Shadow of the Mad King

Halloween is alive and kicking in Tyria and if you?re looking to get involved in the festivities before they end next week, you?ve come to the right place.? The Shadow of the Mad King is a holiday event in four acts.? The first act has already begun with subsequent acts going live up until Halloween.? ArenaNet has tweeted, however, that the finale will actually be midday Pacific time on October 28.? So make sure you clear out your plans for Sunday if you want to experience it.

To begin unraveling the clues about the strange energy readings the Durmond Priory has discovered, head to the Grand Piazza in Lion?s Arch and talk to Magister Tassi.? She?ll send you an in-game mail with a Candy-Powered Matter Meter (CPMM) along with some candy corn to get you started.? One candy corn will allow you to use the CPMM four times and your first goal is to talk to the ghost, Serene, who is standing right next to Magister Tassi.? Use the CPMM to scan the etheric field (action button 3) and talk to her.

Serene will give you a book that reveals some gruesome details about the Mad King?s childhood and give you clues as to where you should search next.? There are six books in total in this spooky scavenger hunt and after turning them in to Magister Tassi, you?ll have to wait until act 2 commences to continue your quest.? For complete details on where to locate the other five books, check out my video guide.

    Costume Brawl

The costume brawl is a mini-game free-for-all romp that pits disguised players against each other for fun and achievements.? Players who have purchased the witch or Mad King costume from the gem store can lay down cauldrons and ghostly banquet tables which allow everyone to join in the brawl!? In addition, using tonics, toy items, costumes, or jumping into the Mystic Forge will also transform you so there are tons of ways to get into the game.? Each disguise grants you a new set of abilities and then it?s just a matter of finding other costumed players to beat down!? While mostly just for fun, if you manage to get your score high enough without getting knocked out, you?ll earn achievements for becoming ?King of the Costume Brawl?.? But be warned, having that illustrious title puts a giant crown icon over your character so you?re sure to be everyone?s next target!

Haunted Doors, Candy Corn Nodes, and Pumpkin Carving

You?ll find each of these items sprinkled around Tyria in random places.? You can knock on Haunted Doors for a chance at a personalized trick-or-treat bag or a trick, which spawns a host of Halloween-themed bad guy for you to destroy and loot. ?Gendarren Fields appears to be a popular spot to locate these nightmarish portals.

Candy Corn mining nodes are a great way to stock up on the sugary sweet.? These candied morsels are used as currency for spooky weapon skins, new crafting recipes, and for acquiring the final part of the October monthly achievement.

Carving 150 pumpkins during the event unlocks achievements and the Master Carver title for you to enjoy forever.? Hold down the ctrl key to make it easier to find any nearby pumpkins and be on the lookout for guides like this one to make your search easier.

    Black Lion Trading Company

The gem store has been updated with all sorts of Halloween-themed item, but if you?re interested in acquiring them, you have to act fast as many of the items will be available for a limited time only.? There are several new town clothes items including a Witch/Warlock costume and a Mad King?s outfit, which include roleplaying skills for equipping them. ?(By the way, the witch costume on an asura is something not to be missed.) ?PvP fans can purchase Mad King and Scarecrow finishers to add insult to injury to their slain foes.? There are also new scary tonics, personalized trick-or-treat bags, and a new trio of spooky mini-pets.? Everyone should visit the store and pick up a free pair of devil horns.? If you?re interested in seeing what any of these items look like, click here for a video preview.

    Crafting and Mystic Forge Recipes

Several haunting crafting recipes are now available in Lion?s Arch including tonics for artificers and new yummy snacks for chefs.? There are also ways to get the temporary Halloween-themed weapons as permanent items, but be warned the materials are quite difficult to obtain.

Pick up some personalized trick-or-treat bags for a chance at some new sigil and rune recipes. ?Folks are also making good use of the Mystic Forge to discover new levels of awesomeness.? Did you buy the three new spooky minis from the gem store?? Throw them into the Mystic Forge along with 250 pieces of candy corn and get an exclusive chainsaw-wielding skeleton mini!

    And So Much More

ArenaNet has slipped in so many interesting little nuances into this patch, it?s impossible to list them all.? They really want to encourage players to explore and experiment.? There are reports of players using the Candy-powered Matter Meter to uncover all sorts of hidden goodies. ?Talk to kids running around Lion?s Arch and give them candy corn in exchange for treat bags. ?Check out your achievements page for a whole list of holiday-inspired goals.? There?s also a new mini-dungeon called the Forsaken Halls in the Dredgehaunt Cliffs, though this is likely a permanent (non-holiday) fixture in Tyria.? Lastly, if you?re one of the disgruntled folks who have opened a ton of Black Lion chests hoping for some Halloween-inspiried weaponry, take heart. ?ArenaNet is looking to add a way to convert your unwanted treasures into the haunted items you seek!

    ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

ArenaNet has knocked the ball out of the park with this holiday event. On top of everything listed, we still have three more acts to uncover, including the finale on Sunday!? We?re interested in hearing about your Halloween adventures in Tyria.? Let us know what you?ve discovered in the comments section below!

Spaghetti & meatballs in a new and paleo friendly version

During the weekend we haven?t seen much of the sun and instead it has been really dark and time for some cozy-couch cover-up! I?ve been reading books, drinking coffee, finishing school assignments, watching movies and of course spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Warm soups, dreamy chocolate cake and baked apples has all been on the menu, and then last night it was time to revisit some of the warm aromatic flavours from the middle east.

I have made the meatballs for this dish many times before. It is one of our favourites since they are hot, spicy and still have a sweet twist to them. I have been wanting to incorporate them into a dish, and that?s when I got the idea for this spicy and jet fresh and crispy recipe.
We have this amazing kitchen tool called a julienne peeler. It?s really cool, cheap and very easy to use, and it makes it possible to eat ?spaghetti? in all new kinds of ways you never imagined possible. You can also cut all sort of veggies into julienne which is often used when cooking asian foods, or simply if you want a salad with nice fine textures. Sometimes I use half zucchini spaghetti and half whole grain spaghetti, but for this dish it is sufficient with only zucchini, and it makes the dish more light and paleo friendly ? I need to be supportive of both lifestyles going on in this apartment ;)

Since colder times are on the move I love to add extra spices and chilli to the food. You get such a warm and hearty feeling, and it brings a familiar flushing of the cheeks that?s so very welcome in the cold winter. At the same time the dish is very light and fresh, and leaves the body with energy instead of steeling it by having to digest a heavy meal.
Fennel seeds and nigella seeds are both aromatic and very lovely spices which can make even the most boring meal an exotic food experience. If you are not familiar with these spices you should definitely try to use them in your cooking right away. Nigella seeds are amazing when you sprinkle them on homemade buns and brings that middle eastern flavour to your bread. Fennel seeds have a liquorice flavour and they are incredible even for snacking, I sometimes snack fennel seeds with gooey banana chips, yum!
I can recommend you to make a double batch of the tomato-chili sauce and store one half in a jar in the fridge. It makes it very easy to prepare the dish again, and believe me you will crave it soon again, or you can just use the sauce as any regular tomato sauce for pizza, pasta in, lasagne etc.
Hopefully you?ll enjoy this recipe and be left with a warm feeling and a craving for more?

Zucchini spaghetti w. spicy meatballs and?chill-tomato sauce
    Serves 3-4

    Spicy meatballs
    400 g minced beef meat
    1 egg
    1 onion, grated
    1/2 bundle of parsley, chopped
    2 tbsp sweet chili sauce
    ? tsp hot chili powder
    1 tsp nigella seeds
1 tsp fennel seeds, finely chopped
    1 tsp salt
    pepper

    Chili-tomato sauce
    1 14 oz/400 g can of organic tomatoes
    1/2 cup/125 ml red wine
    1 onions
    1 fresh red chilli
    2 Tbsp soy
    2 Tbsp red wine balsamic
    1 Tbsp tomato paste
    1 Tbsp olive oil
    4 cloves of garlic
    1/2 bundle fresh basil leaves
    salt and pepper

    Zucchini spaghetti
    2 zucchinis
    1/2 bundle parsley
    1/2 bundle fresh basil leaves

    Directions:
    1. Start with making the tomato-chili sauce. Chop onions and garlic. Split the chill open, remove seeds and chop it. In a pot saut? onions in olive oil in 5-10 min until they appear slightly golden. Then add chill and garlic and saut? 1 more minute. Add the rest of the ingredients, and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, and leave it at least for 1 hour while preparing the rest. Remember to stir it occasionally.
    2. Now to the meatballs. In a bowl combine all of the ingredients except the eggs and mix it well together. Then add the egg and mix it into the rest. Let the mixture set in the fridge for 20-30 min.
    3. Use a julienne peeler (or a sharp knife and patience) to ?make? the zucchini spaghetti. Peel the zucchini until you reach the soft middle which is filled with seeds (don?t use it but save it for smoothies or juices). Roughly chop the basil leaves and parsley and mix into the zucchini spaghetti.
Tip: drizzle with some olive oil, lemon, roasted nuts, salt & pepper, and use it instead of pasta anytime or as a light appetiser or side-dish.
    4. Remove meat mixture from fridge. Heat some oil in a big frying pan on medium heat. Use a big tea spoon and one hand to shape the beef mixture into balls, and place them in the skillet. Cook them for approximately 5 min on each side until they have browned and look done. Cut one open to see if they are cooked all the way through.
    5. Use a blender (I prefer a hand held blender) to blend the tomato mix into a smooth sauce. If it seems to thick add a little water. Taste it, and adjust the taste with salt & pepper or any of the other taste boosting ingredients (balsamic, tomato paste, soy).
    6. On each platter combine zucchini spaghetti with very hot tomato sauce and some meatballs, drizzle with nigella seeds.

    - Enjoy

Dutch art heist museum says security system in order

ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands (Reuters) - The Dutch art gallery at the centre of an audacious heist last week said that the electronic locks on its doors were disarmed before thieves made off with paintings by Picasso, Monet and others worth tens of millions of dollars.

The seven stolen works - which also include a Gauguin, a Lucian Freud and a Meyer de Haan - were on loan from a private collection for a special exhibition at Rotterdam's Kunsthal of impressionism, expressionism, and other modern art movements.

The theft was one of the art world's most dramatic in recent years, and one of the biggest in the Netherlands.

The apparent ease with which the thieves entered and escaped has raised questions about the Kunsthal's security system and whether an insider was involved.

The Kunsthal said in a statement on Monday that the electronic locks on its doors were in working order, but were designed to automatically unbolt shortly after the burglar alarm was set off. After that, only mechanical door locks stood between the intruders and the Kunsthal's treasures.

"The theft on Monday night suggests the intruders forced the lock after the unbolting, presumably quickly," the statement said.

The thieves forced the mechanical lock on an emergency exit at the rear of the ground floor gallery. Police arrived at the scene within five minutes, but the intruders had already gone.

Defending its security installation in the face of speculation, the gallery said an independent inspection of its security apparatus in August had found only that one motion detector was blocked off. It had been immediately repaired.

On Friday, the police released security camera footage which showed the thieves entering through the back door before disappearing from the camera's field of view. Seconds later, they come back into view carrying bulky objects, and leave the same way they entered.

The faces of the thieves cannot be seen clearly on the footage, but police are appealing to the public to come forward if they recognise their bags or clothing. Police say they have already received 60 tips relating to the robbery.

The Kunsthal, in Rotterdam's leafy museum quarter, does not have its own collection.

It had only just opened a new exhibition of works from the private Triton Foundation - collected by the Cordia family, which made its money in shipping and oil - to celebrate its 20th anniversary when the break-in took place during Monday night.

The gallery reopened on Thursday, and the empty spaces previously occupied by the stolen paintings were filled with new works from the Triton collection.

Police appeals for information are posted around the museum park, home to half a dozen museums besides the Kunsthal, which was designed by Rem Koolhaas.

The museum has not said which paintings now hang in place of the stolen works, which included Matisse's "La Liseuse en Blanc et Jaune", Monet's "Waterloo Bridge, London" and "Charing Cross Bridge, London", Gauguin's "Femme devant une fen?tre ouverte", De Haan's "Autoportrait" and Freud's "Woman with Eyes Closed".

But even the absence of Picasso's "T?te d'Arlequin", which was the exhibition's centrepiece, has not dampened interest in the exhibition, which was crowded on Sunday.

"Numbers are way up since the theft," said the cloakroom attendent with a smile. "Disaster tourists."

Ukraine's economy nears post-election crunch time

MAKIYIVKA, Ukraine (Reuters) - Crumbling concrete pillars resemble ancient Greek temples, abandoned and overgrown, next to slag heaps that smell like piles of rotten eggs just a mile away from the center of the Ukrainian town of Makiyivka.

Once a showcase for communist industrialization accounting for more than a tenth of the Soviet Union's coal and steel output, the town of 400,000 today is a symbol of poverty and decay.

With its steel mill obsolete and state-run coal mines stagnating, Makiyivka is a stark symbol of the problems facing the economy as Ukraine approaches an October 28 election: extreme vulnerability to external shocks and lack of reforms resulting in a dismal business climate.

Official statistics show that Makiyivka boasts one of the highest average wages in Ukraine at about $400 per month. But the town's aspect and its residents tell a different story.

Abandoned and looted buildings and frozen construction sites dot the town which has all but merged with Donetsk, the center of President Viktor Yanukovich's home region.

"I make 30-50 hryvnias ($4-6) a day ... We just barely get by," says Svetlana, 33, a single mother of three who now sells socks and slippers at an open-air market after she was made redundant at a local shoe factory two years ago.

Makiyivka's steel mill, which relied largely on outdated open hearth furnaces, was shut down in 2003 and has since been reduced to a rolling facility processing steel from another nearby mill.

Some facilities, such as furnaces, have been dismantled. Others, such as temple-like circular water purifiers, have been left to rot. The plant's work force has been reduced to about 1,000 people from 7,500.

With demand for steel, Ukraine's main export, sagging due to the euro zone crisis, other local producers are under threat as well. Ukraine's steel production fell 5.6 percent in January-September compared with the same period of 2011.

Just as in Makiyivka, the steel sector's troubles are having a knock-on effect on the wider economy across the country.

Ukraine's industrial output shrank 7.0 percent year-on-year in September after falling 4.7 percent in August and some analysts say overall economic growth could be zero this year.

The problem is aggravated by the fact that the hryvnia has been pegged to the dollar since early 2010, making Ukrainian exports less competitive and causing a domestic credit crunch as banks anticipate depreciation.

Analysts say the exchange rate policy was at least partly driven by political considerations and meant to demonstrate stability achieved under Yanukovich, who came to power in February 2010.

"A lackluster performance by the export sector and the tight hryvnia-to-dollar peg are the key reasons why Ukraine's foreign trade and current account deficits have kept widening," HSBC said in a report on Monday.

"The latter is approaching 10 percent of GDP, which we believe is hardly sustainable."

Analysts say the question is not whether the hryvnia will depreciate after the election but when exactly and by how much, although the authorities say it will remain stable.

    STAGNATION

Yanukovich's Party of the Regions, which seeks to retain a majority in the vote this weekend, has touted stability as its key accomplishment during the campaign.

Indeed, output has been stable and wages grew by several percentage points every quarter at Makiyivvuhillya, the state-run coal firm that is now the main industrial enterprise in Makiyivka, for the last two years, says local mining trade union official Anatoly Akimochkin.

But no new mines are being built and coal is now often being stockpiled rather than sold because of falling demand, he said.

This means that next year, when the company is scheduled for privatization along with hundreds of other state assets, investors are likely to break it up and close some facilities.

    "Lay-offs are inevitable," Akimochkin said.

Utilities are another sector where state policies have focused on preserving the status quo. Ukrainians are paying only a fraction of the market price for household gas and heating services, with the rest subsidized by the state budget.

The price of gas, which Ukraine imports from Russia, has been rising steadily but the government has so far refused to raise household gas and heating prices, losing access to a $15 billion International Monetary Fund facility as a result.

The Fund, whose program could have provided Ukraine with much-needed fiscal and foreign exchange cushions, says price hikes are essential in order to cut the budget deficit and avoid falling into a debt trap.

Ukrainian officials now say they are making progress in talks on renewing IMF lending, although the Fund has made no such indications and the government insists it will not raise utility prices.

Meanwhile municipal infrastructure, plagued by inefficiency and under-financing, is falling apart. In large parts of Makiyivka, water flows from taps only a few hours per day.

"Last time hot water ran from my tap was in April 1997," says Akimochkin. "Sewers often leak into the streets."

With key reforms delayed and corruption remaining rampant, private investors - aside from Yanukovich's financial backers such as billionaire industrialists Rinat Akhmetov and Dmytro Firtash - are reluctant to put their money into Ukraine.

A business climate index based on a survey of more than 100 Ukrainian and foreign companies carried out by lobbying group European Business Association fell to a three-year low in the third quarter of 2012.

"Investors have been spooked by looming fiscal pressure, corruption, and general uncertainty in the run-up to October's parliamentary elections," the group said in a statement this month.

Uncertainty is the world that best matches the sentiment of Makiyivka's residents who see the relative stability of the last few years as stagnation.

"We are just treading water," says Akimochkin of the trade union.

(AP) ? Fidel Castro has appeared in public for the first time in months, a top hotel executive told The Associated Press on Sunday, challenging persistent rumors that the aging revolutionary is near death.

The 86-year-old retired leader dropped off a Venezuelan guest at the Hotel Nacional on Saturday afternoon, then stayed to chat with hotel staff, commercial director Yamila Fuster said.

"Fidel Castro was here yesterday, he brought a guest and spoke to workers and hotel leaders for 30 minutes," Fuster said. She said she was not present but that the news was being released officially by the state-owned establishment.

"They told me he looked very good. He was wearing a checked shirt and a hat," she said.

Fuster would not release the name of the Venezuelan guest, but witnesses at the hotel say former Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua is staying there. A car with Venezuelan diplomatic plates was parked Sunday outside the hotel, and Cuban officials were seen carrying a photo album similar to ones the government gives as gifts to distinguished guests, normally filled with official pictures.

No photos have yet been released of Fidel's visit, but Fuster said they may be soon.

Asked to confirm the news, the Cuban government referred all questions to the hotel.

The Nacional is Cuba's most famous hotel and a common choice of many distinguished guests to the island.

Castro's health has been the subject of intense speculation for years, but the rumors gained force in recent days after he failed to publicly congratulate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a top ally, on his Oct. 7 electoral victory. The former Cuban leader has not appeared since March, when he was shown greeting visiting Pope Benedict XVI, and he has also ceased writing his once-constant opinion pieces, the last of which appeared in June.

Twitter and other social media sites have been abuzz with claims of Castro's demise. Late last week, a Venezuelan doctor purported to have information that Castro had suffered a stroke, but the same doctor has previously claimed knowledge that turned out to be false.

Sunday's news from the Hotel Nacional appeared to be Cuba's attempt to hit back against what it says are false and malicious rumors. A letter attributed to Castro was published Thursday by Cuban state media. In it, he congratulated graduates of a medical school on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

Two close family members of Castro have also recently denied he is in grave condition. Juanita Castro, the former leader's sister, told the AP in Miami that reports of her brother's condition are "pure rumors" and "absurd."

Son Alex Castro told a reporter for a weekly Cuban newspaper that his father "is well, going about his daily life."

Castro stepped down in 2006 following a severe illness, handing power to his brother Raul.

Greater parental stress linked to children's obesity, fast food use, reduced activity

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Parents with a higher number of stressors in their lives are more likely to have obese children, according to a new study by pediatric researchers. Furthermore, when parents perceive themselves to be stressed, their children eat fast food more often, compared to children whose parents feel less stressed.

"Stress in parents may be an important risk factor for child obesity and related behaviors," said Elizabeth Prout-Parks, M.D., a physician nutrition specialist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, who led a study published online October 22 in the November issue of Pediatrics. "The severity and number of stressors are important."

Among the parental stressors associated with childhood obesity are poor physical and mental health, financial strain, and leading a single-parent household, said Prout-Parks. Although previous researchers had found a connection between parental stress and child obesity, the current study covered a more diverse population, both ethnically and socioeconomically, than did previous studies.

The study team suggested that interventions aimed at reducing parental stress and teaching coping skills may assist public health campaigns in addressing childhood obesity.

The researchers analyzed self-reported data from 2,119 parents and caregivers who participated in telephone surveys in the 2006 Southeastern Pennsylvania Household Health Survey/Community Health Database, conducted in Philadelphia and neighboring suburbs. The households contained children aged 3 to 17, among whom 25 percent were obese. Among the variables included were parental stressors, parent-perceived stress, age, race, health quality and gender of children, adult levels of education, BMI, gender, sleep quality, and outcomes such as child obesity, fast-food consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption, and physical activity.

Of the measured stressors, single-parent households had the strongest relationship with child obesity, while financial stress had the strongest relationship for a child not being physically active. Unexpectedly, neither parent stressors nor parent-perceived stress was associated with decreased fruit and vegetable consumption by their children.

However, this study was the first to find an association between parent-perceived stress and more frequent fast-food consumption by children. Fast food, often containing high quantities of fat and sugar, is an important risk factor for obesity and child health. The researchers speculated that parents experiencing stress may buy more fast food for the family, to save time or reduce the demands of meal preparation. The authors also suggest that actual and perceived parental stress may result in less supervision of children, who may then make unhealthy food and activity choices.

"Although multiple stressors can elicit a 'stressor pile-up,' causing adverse physical health in children, parent's perception of their general stress level may be more important than the actual stressors," the authors write.

Future research on child obesity should further examine other family behaviors and community factors not available in the current study, conclude the authors. In addition, "Clinical care, research and other programs might reduce levels of childhood obesity by developing supportive measures to reduce stressors on parents," said Prout-Parks. "Teaching alternative coping strategies to parents might also help them to reduce their perceived stress."

(AP) ? Nigeria's military arrested a member of the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram at the home of a prominent senator, as ongoing violence blamed on the sect in a nearby city has killed at least 23 people in recent days, officials said.

Shuaibu Muhammed Bama had been found "in a serving senator's home" in Maiduguri on Thursday night, military spokesman Lt. Col. Sagir Musa said. Musa described Bama as a commander who organized attacks in Bama, a town just southeast of Maiduguri in Borno state.

Those living in Nigeria's Muslim north often take the name of their town or village as a surname. He also is not the first to join Boko Haram from that town. Authorities blamed a Christmas Day car bombing of a Catholic church outside Nigeria's capital that killed at least 44 people on Habibu Bama, a former soldier from the town. Security forces killed Habibu Bama in June, the sect has said.

Musa did not name the senator in his statement. However, the only senator who has a home in the area where Bama was arrested in is Sen. Ahmed Zanna, a member of the governing People's Democratic Party in Nigeria's National Assembly. Zanna and officials in his office could not be immediately reached for comment Saturday morning.

Rumors have always circled that Boko Haram received backing from some political sponsors in Nigeria, a country where politicians often arm militants to rig elections. In January, President Goodluck Jonathan himself said that the sect had infiltrated all levels of government, including the armed forces and security agencies.

This is not the first time a serving senator has been accused of being in league with Boko Haram. Sen. Mohammed Ali Ndume was arrested in November and faces charges that he was involved with the group.

Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's north, is blamed for killing more than 690 people this year alone, according to an AP count. The sect wants Nigeria's government to release its imprisoned members and to implement strict Shariah law across this multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people. The sect's attacks have raised religious tensions across Nigeria, which is largely split between its predominantly Christian south and Muslim north.

Meanwhile, hospital records seen by The Associated Press in nearby Potiskum, Nigeria, showed the local hospital has received at least 23 corpses after fighting began there Thursday. Officials at Potiskum General Hospital declined to comment about the killings, though some of the corpses of the dead still filled the hospital's mortuary.

Potiskum, a city 140 miles (230 kilometers) west of Maiduguri, has seen increasingly violent attacks carried out by Boko Haram in the last six months. On Saturday, the burned-out remains of schools still smoldered in the city, razed after attacks locals blamed on the sect.

Boko Haram, which speaks to local journalists in telephone conference calls at times of its choosing, could not be immediately reached for comment Saturday.

The killings in Potiskum continued Saturday, as witnesses said gunmen raided the Potiskum home of a former Nigeria Customs Service official and killed him and his son. An AP journalist saw a convoy of military vehicles arrive in the city Saturday afternoon, likely reinforcements coming in to help the soldiers stationed there.

Relationship Retreats: Warriors to Soul Mates | Fatherhood Channel

    Hans Petersen, VA staff writer

?I wish you could have been present to see the tears, bonding and joy, the healing for so many.?

VA Chaplain Dick Millspaugh is talking about the Veterans and loved ones who attend relationship-bonding retreats.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is trying a new path to caring for and healing the nation?s wounded Veterans. Now, in addition to repairing their damaged bodies and minds, VA is going one step further and helping to repair their crumbling intimate relationships.

Veteran Marriage RetreatsThe retreats are conducted by VA chaplains, social workers, psychologists, and nurses. They are PAIRS-certified instructors, teaching better communication skills, relationship skills, and emotional literacy skills to couples. PAIRS stands for: Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills.

?Research shows that 70 percent of our combat Veterans are experiencing marital problems,? said VA Chaplain Ron Craddock. ?Twenty percent of them decide to divorce before they even return from theatre. This is staggering. The toll on the individual Veteran is staggering. The toll on his family is staggering.?

PAIRS Veteran Marriage Retreats? They taught us how to listen to each other,? say Michelle, wife of an Army Veteran. ?When that happens, it brings you closer together. It feels really, really good.?

Chaplain Millspaugh has dozens of quotes like that.

The VA retreats, called ?From Warrior to Soul Mate,? are based on a program created by the nonprofit PAIRS Foundation which, for over a quarter century, has provided educational programs that deliver practical skills to strengthen marriages and families.

The retreats take place in a group setting, with instructors, often over a Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday, or in several class sessions.

Instructors are skilled, perceptive, effective facilitators from various disciplines.
They have been trained and certified.

?How can one measure the lives saved??

    PAIRS Veteran Marriage Retreats

The retreats of 30-60 people are conducted with an open invitation for participants to ask questions and offer contributions from their unique life experiences. After introductions, instructors outline ground rules for discussion, and then explore an understanding of how learning and relationships evolve. Soon participants are introduced to practical communication tools and invited to practice those skills with their partners.

An example of one of the sessions at a weekend retreat:

PAIRS Veteran Marriage RetreatsPAIRS Relationship Roadmap ? The conversation begins with an exploration of the root causes of pain and pleasure, considering symptoms and signs of happiness and unhappiness and their connection to the deprivation or fulfillment of biologically-based needs, including the human need for bonding.

Here?s a complete overview of what happens at the retreats and a look at the syllabus.

The vision to move the ?From Warrior to Soul Mate? initiative from a local effort to a VA nationwide program has been an outstanding success. Since 2011:

    • Nine ?Train the Trainer? workshops have certified over 400 PAIRS facilitators at VA locations around the country.
    • Multiple enrichment retreats have been held at 26 different sites to the benefit of hundreds of couples.
    • Partnerships have been set up with the faith community, the American Red Cross, the Border Patrol and organizations serving Active Duty personnel.

Participants? evaluations revealed that many Vets and their partners felt that ?everyone in the military should be required to attend? such retreats, that the retreats helped with the problems of multiple deployments, PTSD, and other challenges of military service and transition.

    This slideshow requires JavaScript.

?I would like to say thank you for PAIRS couples retreat. It helped my husband and I see that our relationship is still worth fighting for.?

In a lengthy report filled with important statistics, Chaplain Millspaugh reflected, ?How can one measure the lives literally saved from suicide, the children not touched by divorce, the costs not incurred by stress borne illnesses or homelessness??

From Warrior to Soul Mate has been a unique and important program to help so many of America?s Veterans strengthen the health of their families.
